Parents, Not Schools, Should Decide What to Pack for Lunch

Interesting article from an outstanding Dallas-area feeding therapist, Jenny McGlothlin, and her co-author, Dr. Katja Rowell. I will provide a separate link to their excellent book, "Helping Your Child With Extreme Picky Eating." We all wish kids had a perfectly nutritious lunch at school, whether packed by parents or provided at school. Real life is more complicated than that, however. Many children have food allergies, extreme picky eating, or family stressors that preclude having a perfect lunch each day. Schools should not shame a child about what is in their lunch box. It is also worth having a conversation with your child about differences in eating habits and diets so they don't tease or bully another child about their choices.

Some school wellness policies enable or require school staff to hover, judge, and even confiscate food.

Today is World Autism Day

FLP is proud to support the families and children affected by autism. Developmental monitoring and early childhood intervention are critical in helping all children achieve to the best of their abilities.

Autism affects 1 in 68 children in the U.S. April 2 -- World Autism Day -- marks the launch of Autism Awareness Month. The AAP offers many resources on autism: patient education materials, parent books and guidance for clinicians.
