RAL is always proud to support our friends in their mission to provide top quality animals. We support our friends at Josh's Frogs during this difficult time and will continue to provide top notch validated diagnostic services with industry leading turn around times. Having worked internationally with the Diane Fossey gorilla fund in Rwanda, we continue our research in conjunction with academic institutions through data sharing and commitment to communication and collaboration. Together we can advance exotic husbandry 🥰
MESSAGE FROM JOSH:
During a routine, random chytrid test, we found some animals that tested positive. If you aren't randomly testing your collection, you need to. We never had any animals showing any symptoms. Without random tests, we never would have found it. Plants, insects, and dry goods are not affected by chyrtid.
Through hundreds of tests, we were able to trace the spread to a group of frogs we received back from an institution that had the animals on loan over the summer. While these animals were in quarantine we had two biosecurity breaches involving these animals. The first was a pixie frog that popped out of his container upon coming into our building. The second breach from that group of frogs happened when two bins were accidentally cleared with another group of frogs in quarantine and subsequently moved out of quarantine with that group.
We have been working closely with researchers at various institutions as well as staff at RAL. Due to how easily chytrid can spread, we are currently treating our entire collection. After treatment, the current standard is two negative tests 7 days apart. It's a long process. We are working with others who are producing animals to help connect customers with quality amphibians.
To say that this has been stressful work for our keepers is an extreme understatement. If you know any of them personally, please reach out and encourage them. They would appreciate it, as would I.
I want to say thank you to everybody that reached out so far with encouragement. It means the world to me and our people. On the other side of this, we will have a lot of data to dump on the hobby. Our hope is that our pain and transparency will highlight responsible keeping and biosecurity in our hobby, and help create a healthier trade.
