The lunch time breakout session in the TEDxAtlanta Refresh Room is with Dorsey Standish of Mastermind Meditate. 🧘‍♀️🧘🧘‍♂️

Begin at the Beginning with your health: learn how mental fitness is a key part of total health and well-being. As a neuroscientist and mindfulness expert, Dorsey will share information on the brain health benefits of mindfulness, lead you in a rejuvenating mindful meditation practice, and discuss key takeaways for mindful living. This session will inspire you to change yourself, and the world around you, beginning with your own brain health.

Dorsey Standish is the CEO and Chief Mindfulness Officer of Mastermind, a Dallas-based gym for your brain. Dorsey is a mechanical engineer, neuroscientist, and wellness expert who brings evidence-based mindfulness meditation to clients nationwide. Dorsey has shared science-based mindfulness solutions with hundreds of companies, including Staples, Deloitte, United Way, Peloton, and Pier 1. Dorsey’s teachings draw on her training as a teacher of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction through Brown University and her deep experience on regular seven-day silent meditation retreats studying with master teachers.

We’re so excited for this event tomorrow! ✨ Vibe Hive has partnered with TEDxAtlanta on their last two big events to bring a sensory detox “ReFresh” room to the experience. 🌱

This year, we’ve curated an powerful and eclectic lineup including our very own co-founder Carissa Kubitz teaching qigong 🌬, Dorsey Standish of Mastermind Meditate leading a mindful lunch and coffee break ☕️, and Claudia Yaffa of Yaffa Well and Faith of leading an afternoon yoga and sound bowl session! 🙏💞 The purpose of this sensory detox space known as the ReFresh Room is to provide a place for the body and mind to unwind and decompress and in turn, more fully process the new information presented during the TEDx sessions. When Vibe Hive introduced this to TEDxAtlanta in 2019, it was an in-person event, with elements that ignited all the senses (sight, touch, sound, taste, smell). While the 2021 ReFresh Room is a virtual space, we are still offering a full sensory experience. This space offers a balance and alternative to the bustling energy buzzing in the conference space and provides event attendees the opportunity to get the most out of their TEDxAtlanta experience.

ReFresh Room Discovery Session Flow:

915-940am: Interactive Discovery Session: All-levels Qigong Class with Carissa Kubitz

11-1140am: Interactive Discovery Session: Health Begins in the Brain -- Mindful Tea & Coffee Break with Dorsey Standish

105-140pm: Interactive Discovery Session: Afternoon Wakeup Yoga + Sound Bath with Claudia Yaffa and Faith Maima

If you weren't in the workshop I held last week on creativity and mindfulness with Mastermind Meditate, here is a 💎 you missed:

Practice being bored or mind-wandering. You may be asking, why boredom? Isn't that the opposite of the productivity of creativity?

It's part of the process - Boredom is linked to increased creativity through activation of the Default Mode Network in the brain. When you're not TRYING to achieve a goal, and just take everything in, as it is and in the moment, your mind shifts.
This week, try turning off the screens and just take everything in. Get outside in nature or spend play time with kids and/or pets. Being bored isn't as bad for you as you think!
We are taking this morning to to Mastermind Meditate's '6 Easy Ways to Incorporate Mindfulness'. Read here to see how you can be mindful this morning:

Did you know mindfulness can reduce subconscious bias? We are just as excited as you about this! This practice is able to dig deep into people's mind and tap into their subconcious. A study was conducted that showed participants that listened to a lovingkindness meditation had less implicit race and age bias.

If you are unfamiliar, a lovingkindness meditation is focusing benevolent and loving enery towards yourself an others. Through using a series of phrases or mantras, you're able to soften the heart and mind and go deeper and deeper into the feeling of kindness and pure love.

If you are feeling eager to try a mindfulness meditation like lovingkindness but need a place to start, we have a free resource library to help you get started!

Nearly 8 out of 10 employees in America regularly experience physical symptoms of stress at work which can have negative effects on our health including high blood pressure and depression.

Here are a few ideas to incorporate mindfulness into your workday for reduced stress and enhanced productivity.

Breathe. We may not have time to sit for a 10-minute mindfulness meditation, but we always have time to take a deep breath (or three!).

Move. Sitting behind a desk for eight hours a day can make it easy to forget that the mind and body are connected. Stay aware of your body by moving once per hour.

Practice single-tasking. While far from commonplace in the digital age, dedicating all your focus to one task at a time is actually the most efficient mode for your brain.

Listen. When we are stressed and overwhelmed, it’s easy to forget that our lives are made up of moments. Connections with those around us are what make these moments memorable!

Practice gratitude. Our brains have evolved to protect us with a negativity bias, meaning our brains are wired to cling to bad memories and discount good ones. Practice being extra aware of the good things by pausing to be grateful during your day, even if it’s something as small as a coworker who made you laugh or a nice cup of coffee or tea.

Have you ever been on a walk but were so consumed by thoughts and your mental to-do list that by the time its over, you can barely recall what happened? You are definitely not alone!

Studies have been done to see the effects of taking a mindful walk versus letting your mind run. It suggests that mindful movement can help boost your well being. Even keeping your same activities (walking, stretching, working out, etc) and shifting your mindset to be more mindful can benefit you greatly!

Next time you get some movement in, try and notice everything going on in the presence moment! If you need some ideas for mindful movement, we have plenty in our resource library!

Did you know your brain is always changing in its structure and connections?

Neuroplasticity or brain plasticity refers to the brain’s ability to change through experiences. The human brain has the ability to reorganize itself by forming new connections between brain cells. The brain can expand and contract throughout its life.

Studies indicate that mindfulness practice can lead to increases in regional brain gray matter density. Here is a quick mindfulness excercise to start changing your brain for the better by strengthening the insula's abiity to sense your body (interoception!):

Feel your feet on the floor and notice any sensations in them. Then invite a deep breath in, drawing the breath through the feet and up through the legs, torso, arms, neck and head. Exhale as if you could release the breath from the crown of the head. Repeat as needed.
