A Conversation on Parenting & Personalities with First Lady Serita Jakes, Dr. Anita Phillips, & Ask Dr. Jill

“We need to be able to produce for our children not what’s natural to us, but what they need.” - Dr. Anita Phillips

While it’s natural to parent from who we are, it’s important to step outside of our comfort zone and pivot to what our loved ones actually need. With all of the challenges surrounding distanced learning within the confines of a pandemic, back to school is anything but back to normal this year. Getting our loved ones off to class is filled with many emotions, but as parents and care-givers we can provide support that keeps them connected to their heart’s home.

We’d love to hear from you! Join the conversation and let us know if you’ve ever had to pivot your parenting or care-giving style based on different personalities?

Developing our emotional vocabulary is essential to being able to always locate ourselves and bring ourselves home. The more we’re able to articulate how we’re feeling, the more we’re able to articulate what we need. Together, we’re making space for our emotions because they are deserving of a home too.

“Sometimes we ask people, “What do you need?”, but first we need to know, “How do you feel?”, because certain negative emotions in particular are associated with unmet needs, and when we can begin to meet those needs, that’s a way of bringing people home.” Dr. Anita Phillips

Many thanks to Ask Dr. Jill and Dr. Anita Phillips for engaging in an important conversation with First Lady Serita Jakes about emotional health.

I was diagnosed with Gilliam Barre almost 10 years ago after receiving the flu shot. It triggered neuropathy and chronic pain. I suffer limited mobility. I’m skeptical. Thoughts?
Thank you so much Dr. Jill for an absolutely wonderful and informative presentation to the 10th District AME Church! I learned more in 20 minutes in a manner that I could understand and retain than I have in 10 months. God bless you in your endeavors and may God continue to bless you and cover you and your staff!
Dr .Jill will give you facts on how to take care of your body !
When you have a fever should you take paracetamol?
LOVED THE INTERVIEW YOU HAD DONE WITH T.D. JAKES ON CORONAVIRUS🙌🙌👍👌🙏🙏😷
What a joy to experience another opportunity to feel empowered by Dr. Jill. She freely gives us tools to become better and I am very grateful❤

New coronavirus subvariants escape antibodies from vaccination and prior Omicron infection, studies suggest

This is important to know. Your vaccine and booster will likely keep you out of ICU, but no vaccine is 100% so you can still catch COVID.

New coronavirus subvariants escape antibodies from vaccination and prior Omicron infection, studies suggest Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 appear to escape antibody responses among both people who had previous Covid-19 infection and those who have been fully vaccinated and boosted, according to new data from researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, of Harvard Medical School.

AskDrJill Black History Health Moment: The “Inferiority Narrative”

This is an AskDrJill Black History Health Moment: The “Inferiority Narrative”

The 1830’s Abolitionist movement gave rise to “Negro Medicine” efforts to identify black inferiority to justify slavery.

I share information like this to keep you both informed and empowered. As an African American Physician, I want to teach you how to advocate for yourself. The first step to advocacy is understanding what laid the groundwork for the unfair treatment in the first place. It’s engrained in the culture of medicine, and we have to work together to reverse it.

Vitamin D is sometimes called the “sunshine vitamin” because it’s produced in your skin in response to sunlight. It’s a fat-soluble vitamin in a family of compounds that includes vitamins D-1, D-2, and D-3.

People who have brown skin, block the sun’s rays and tend to have lower Vitamin D level. Physicians can diagnose a Vitamin D deficiency by performing a simple blood test, so make sure you get your levels checked regularly.
___
Here a just a few of the notable benefits of Vitamin D:

-Modulates the immune system which prevents over-reaction (Remember the cytokine storm we talked about a few months ago)
-Reduces Depression
-Helps maintain strong bones
___

To optimize your health, it’s important that you a whole-food plant-based diet, exercise, and drink you water. Remember “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” and your health isn’t optimized overnight. Stay consistent, take your supplements, and !
