The Simple (But Not Easy) Choice That Will Define All of Us I’m standing in my daughter’s room, and she’s showing me her new pen. The body of it is thick and filled with glittering liquid, and it’s still wrapped in the original cellophane. I’m oohing-and-ah… 07/25/2015

Do you have a high energy, challenging, persistent child?

Another good article. There are beginning thoughts but I particularly appreciated the list of suggestions that follow in dealing with everyday events. Number #1 (in my words) refers to avoiding power struggles by using established routines and family rules. "In our house, we ___." Super article! Have a strong-willed child? You're lucky! Strong willed children can be a challenge when they’re young, but if sensitively parented they become terrific teens and young adults. 07/25/2015

Early Signs of Dyslexia

This blogging mom, Melissa Taylor, explained Dyslexia very well..... As a teacher, I assumed (wrongly) that Dyslexia is about about reversing letters and reading backwards. I learned that Dyslexia covers a big range of reading and math challenges. Dyslexia means that the brain processes sounds and/or symbols differently.

A little information about swallowing. These are photographs of a common type of swallow. This person has an Anterior Open Bite. During the swallow, the tongue protrudes beyond the cutting edge of the anterior teeth from the first bicuspid forward. The posture of the tongue is between the teeth. Often, the mouth is open for breathing. Guided care and motivation can change this swallow. It's amazing to witness!

Here's Corinne with her new smile and swallow! She made some amazing changes! I was delighted to help! So proud of you! 04/26/2015

Key to Vocabulary Gap Is Quality of Conversation, Not Dearth of Words

This more recent study magnifies the importance of parent-child conversation. "Conversational turns are vastly more important than the NUMBER OF WORDS a child is exposed to, " Ms. Gilkerson said. "In one recent study, parents of children who scored in the top 10% on preschool language tests had conversations with their children that involved EIGHTEEN more turns taken PER HOUR than parents of children scoring in the bottom 80%. "....more directive, business talk, with short directive sentences doesn't elicit this back and forth." The video is a great example of back and forth talk..... A seminal study on the early word gap between the children of college graduates and high school dropouts has led to more nuanced findings about language development. 04/23/2015

Do you have times when you KNOW that you are witnessing a special moment in time? In January, I experienced one of those as I saw one of "my kids" honored as he became an Eagle Scout! When I met Jonathan, he was a VERY, VERY strong-willed three year old. We worked together weekly until he was twelve....and, my goodness, he has grown in so many ways! He began Scouts because his single mom, in search of positive male role models, found that the Mens' Ministry in Covenant Church sponsored the Boy Scouts program. Mom since married the love of her life and together they led Cub Scouts. The work continued. Jon, I am so proud of you...for the young man you have become! Witnessing your Court of Honor as you became an Eagle Scout was a moment I will always remember!

I would love to help...and, yes, this important work can actually be fun and satisfying! Extensive experience with Language Development, Auditory Processing, Social Language/Autism Spectrum, Articulation, Swallowing, Voice Therapy for Parkinson's. Can guided care of a client with great motivation change this swallow so that orthodontic treatment is lasting? ABSOLUTELY!

This was written by a dad, Mike Larson.....

This is my son Jon with his prom date Maddie. He is a junior and he has autism. About a month ago, Maddie, a senior, came to my office (I’m a teacher at their school) and asked if Jon’s mom and I would allow her to take him to prom. Maddie had gotten to know Jon through a school club that promotes friendships between special needs kids and regular kids. “He’s a junior,” she explained “so it’s his prom too. I just think he should have the chance to go.” I told her we would be honored to have him go with her.
During the next couple weeks, she asked what his favorite color was (orange) so she could get a dress in that color. She also made reservations for their group (they doubled with another couple)at a restaurant that served his favorite food – chicken fingers and French fries.
I encourage everyone to like and share this for three reasons:
1. To show support for special kids like Jon
2. To show support for groups that promote these friendships
3. To remind us all, in a time when we hear about all the terrible things going on, that there are wonderful kids like Maddie working to make others' lives better.

Sometimes I am asked about students struggling with career and college choices. I hear of students changing college majors and losing hours and much frustration. I would suggest to ANY parent that aptitude testing with the Johnson O'Connor Research Foundation would be an excellent choice...especially in the last few years of high school. The JOCRF has existed since 1922. Taken directly from the website: "The JOCRF is a nonprofit scientific research and educational organization with two primary commitments: to study human abilities and to provide people with a knowledge of their aptitudes, helping them in making decisions in school and work." My experience has been that the testing and understanding of aptitudes gives clear direction in terms of college and career choices. It is money well spent! In Dallas, they are located at Prestonwood Tower, 5151 Beltline Road, #615, Dallas, TX 75254, phone 972.991.8378. Website:

Are you aware that there are tax benefits for ALL children with special needs? Even though the title of this article references autism, these apply to all children with special needs. This article is written by Regina M Levy, a CPA and mom of a child with autism. Just wanted to point it out.... Schwab Learning estimates that 15-30 percent of families with a special needs child have one or more unclaimed tax benefits. Are you one of these families??? 01/07/2013

Jill Bolte Taylor's stroke of insight | Video on

This is an incredible story. A brain scientist describes having a massive stroke.... TED Talks Jill Bolte Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: She had a massive stroke, and watched as her brain functions -- motion, speech, self-awareness -- shut down one by one. An astonishing story.

[01/02/13]   I'm laughing...I love to hear kids invent their own words. I was just looking through my 2012 calendar where I had made a note of two.

The first one...
Lynn: Have you seen a movie lately?
Little One: You mean at the MOVIEVATER?

The second one...
Lynn: What's this? (showing an illustration of a burning match)
Little One: A FIRESTICK? (Kids no longer see us use matches...we're using butane lighters!)

Inventing words is a good thing!
