The House Institute Foundation (HIF) adjunct faculty Professor David Bakhos, MD, PhD (University of Tours, France) has been awarded a development grant for a 3-year study focused on the safety and efficacy of sonoporation for drug delivery to the inner ear. Collaborators include Pr. Helene Blasco, PhD, Dr. Jean-Michel Escoffre, PhD, and Dr. John Galvin, PhD.
For individuals with hearing loss, medication is often used to treat inner ear disease. Historically, different approaches have been used to deliver medication.

If results are promising, Professor Bakhos will develop a clinical ultrasonic probe in collaboration with engineers. The possibility of delivering medications to the inner ear using sonoporation may lead to new ways to treat people with hearing loss.

Barbie has just unveiled its first-ever doll with hearing aids.

The iconic American doll manufacturer is releasing a new set of dolls in June as part of its ongoing efforts towards diversity and inclusion. The Fashionista line-up will include a Ken doll with vitiligo, as well as an array of Barbies that come in different shapes, sizes, skin tones and hair textures.

The new approach will help kids "see themselves reflected," said Mattel's Global Head of Barbie Dolls, Lisa McKnight, in a press statement.

She added that children should also be encouraged to play with dolls that don't resemble them to help them "understand and celebrate the importance of inclusion."

William F. House, MD, with Tracy Husted, the first pediatric cochlear implant patient (Los Angeles, 1981). Dr. House pushed against conventional thinking throughout his career. Over the objections of some, he introduced the surgical microscope to ear surgery. Tackling a form of vertigo that doctors had believed was psychosomatic, he developed a surgical procedure that enabled the first American in space to travel to the moon. Peering at the bones of the inner ear, he found enrapturing beauty.

Even after his ear-implant device had largely been supplanted by more sophisticated, and more expensive, devices, Dr. House remained convinced of his own version’s utility and advocated that it be used to help the world’s poor.

Neither the institute nor Dr. House made any money on the implant. He never sought a patent on any of his inventions, he said, because he did not want to restrict other researchers. A nephew, Dr. John House, said his uncle had made the deal to license it to the 3M Company not for profit but simply to get it built by a reputable manufacturer.
