According to the World Health Organization, depression is the #1 cause of ill health & disability worldwide. Anxiety is the most prevalent #mentalhealth or neurodevelopmental disorder in the world and 1-in-7 people globally experience mental illness or substance use disorders.โฃ

The stigma associated with #mentalillness often discourages us from talking about the grief, fear, loneliness, or disappointment that WE ALL face at some point in our lives. Instead, we try to be strong & hold the weight alone.

Speaking from personal experience, my fears and failures made it quite difficult to maintain mental strength. From taking the MCAT 5 times to the fear of applying to one of the most competitive residencies.

Not to mention the disappointments I still experience today as a #boardcertifieddermatologist. I have had extremely tough days during my derm journey but what has helped me overcome those feelings of defeat is to talk about them.

Whether Iโ€™m talking to a colleague, friend, or family member, I make it a point to talk about how Iโ€™m feeling and the mental space Iโ€™m in at that moment.

An talking to someone is just one of the many steps you can take towards fighting your mental illnesses or downfalls.

As a dermatologist, I am constantly encouraging my patients to check-in with their #boardcertifieddermatologist for any of their skin related issues.

Well, the same applies for your breast and checking in with your trusted #boardcertified Gynecologist.

When it comes to my girls, I rely on my OBGYN to provide life-saving information on how to check myself and what to do if I ever discover any abnormalities.

This month and onward, stay your health seriously from skincare to breast care. And if havenโ€™t checked yourself lately, take the time to do it NOW!!

If youโ€™re looking for an obgyn, here are a few of my colleagues/friends that I would highly recommend visiting:

We talk a lot about self-care on social media and that definitely has a different meaning to each person.

Self-care could be a new pattern.

Self-care could be a new behavior.

Self-care could be a new work out routine.

Self-care could be a new skin care routine.

Self-care could be making a list of things you are grateful for.

Self-care could be a new hairstyle or new haircut.

Selfcare can be anything you want it to be.

Whatโ€™s most important is that you focus on yourself first, love yourself, and be kind to yourself.

Many of todayโ€™s skin care products are developed for specific skin types. While the labeling is a guide, using products that are not formulated for your skin type are not ideal, as the products might be ineffective or even sabotage your skin. So letโ€™s review your skin type and basic tips for your skin (swipe left โฉ)

1๏ธโƒฃ Normal Skin
โ€œNormalโ€ skin is soft, smooth, has an even tone, without any traces of excess sebum (natural oils). The pore size can range from small to medium & retains a normal level of moisture.

2๏ธโƒฃ Oily Skin
Usually easy to identify as the skin appears shiny due to an overproduction of sebum oils from the sebaceous glands. Pores appear relatively large & this skin type is prone to acne.

3๏ธโƒฃ Dry Skin
Dry skin does not retain moisture or oils easily so it can appear bumpy or flakey & you can see fine lines. The skin may feel tight & there may be concerns of discoloration.

4๏ธโƒฃ Combination (oily & dry)
People with combination skin types have various regions of the skin that exhibit the traits of different skin types. The cheeks may be dry skin while their forehead is oily. Usually one area of the skin overproduces natural oils while other areas under-produce.

5๏ธโƒฃ Sensitive Skin
People with sensitive skin types regularly experience inflammation, redness, or rashes. The skin may become irritated from changes to the weather & may burn easily from sun exposure. Sensitive skin types are more prone to skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis compared to other skin types.

Which skin type are you and what is your tip when it comes to caring for your skin type? โคต๏ธ

Suffering from acne as a young adult woman opened her eyes to exploring a career in dermatology.

As a young African-American woman,ย Dr. Davis was having a hard time looking for a dermatologist who can understand her concern until she met a Hispanic dermatologist that understood her situation very well and took an interest in not just her acne problems before but her overall well-being.

It was then that Dr. Davis decided to pursue dermatology so patients of color and someone who has the same condition as hers would feel comfortable with a doctor who could understand their skin issue.

Dr. Davis believes in a collaborative approach when it comes to helping her patients look and feel their best.

Check out the interesting and inspiring story of Dr. Davis and learn someย ๐’ƒ๐’†๐’‚๐’–๐’•๐’š ๐’•๐’Š๐’‘๐’”ย about having good looking skin, avoiding acne as well as learn some facts about tanning beds and spray tan.

If you want to use the holy Grail of an anti-aging product then let me either remind you or introduce you toโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ. Retinol/Retinal/Retinoid!!

Itโ€™s a vitamin A derivative found in many anti-aging products, and it not only fights wrinkles but it fights acne as well!!

It has different molecular forms that break down into retinoic acid on the skin and act antioxidants that help reverse skin damage. Itโ€™s also a great chemical exfoliants mand has also been shown to increase collagen production.

Not all retinoid products are created equal. Some are prescription strength and some you can get over the counter. And thereโ€™s definitely an option for every skin type.

Swipe โฉ to see some of my favorite OTC recommendations!

Have you incorporated retinoids into your skincare regime?

Skin pigment is determined by melanin, a substance produced by melanocyte cells in the skin. Melanin absorbs UV light, thus protecting the body from its harmful effects. However, it is quite common for melanin to either be inadequately or excessively produced by the body leading to pigment irregularities.

Pigmentation disorders like hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation can make the skin appear lighter or darker, or blotchy in places and can affect people of all races.

With hyperpigmentation, areas of the skin produce more melanin than others, causing dark spots that can take forever to fade.

Several types of hyperpigmentation include:

๐Ÿ”–Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the result of inflammation in the skin caused by acne, burn, rash or traumatic injury. Melanocytes are very sensitive and whenever they are traumatized they release their pigment in response to the injury.

๐Ÿ”–Melasma
Melasma is a stubborn form of pigment that shows up as large patches on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and jaw line. It is the result of hormones, including estrogen and progesterone, that stimulate the melanocytes to produce excess amounts of melanin when exposed to sunlight or heat.

๐Ÿ”–Lentigines โฃ
Actinic lentigines (AKA age spots or sun spots) are brown spots that develop as a result of the cumulative effects of sun damage inflicted on skin, throughout the years. They most commonly appear on the face, neck, & hands and can range from pale brown, dark brown, or even gray in color.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to a long list of hyperpigmented conditions.

Do you or someone you know struggle with hyperpigmentation? โคต๏ธ
