Small shifts in our schedules — earlier mornings, busier days, new routines — can throw puppies for a loop.

With back-to-school season, your pup may notice more quiet time at home or different walking hours.

Next week, we’ll share easy ways to help them adapt so they stay happy, relaxed, and confident as life changes.

👉 How does your puppy handle changes in your routine?

Last week, I watched a pup go from bouncing off the walls to snoozing in five minutes flat — thanks to a stuffed Kong.

It keeps your pup busy, channels chewing appropriately, and helps them wind down after a zoomie storm.

Bonus: you get to sip coffee while it’s still hot. ☕ 👉 What’s your puppy’s favorite “settle down” activity?

One of my favorite puppy parents told me, “I thought we’d failed — then I realized we just needed to take a step back.”

When your adolescent puppy seems to “forget” a skill, go back to basics. Lower distractions. Shrink the distance. Reward the tiny wins like they’re gold.

Meeting them where they are today sets them up to leap forward tomorrow.

👉 When your pup struggles, what’s your go-to “reset” strategy?

“I’m not ignoring you, promise… but did you see those leaves? 🍂

And smell that grass? 🌱

And ohhh, another dog!

I’ll get better at this — thanks for helping me take it one step at a time.”

👉 If your puppy could “explain” their distractions, what do you think they’d say?

🐾 The Puppy Teenage Stage: Patience, Consistency, and Support.

Many families think training is “lost,” but your puppy is just going through a growth stage. Those “off” moments are where trust and teamwork grow.

This week’s blog explains the brain changes and how to guide with patience (and a little humor).

This morning on Puppy Talk with Sarah, I shared about the “I forgot everything” phase.

A client’s pup was mid-perfect recall… then a butterfly floated by. 🦋 Cues didn’t stand a chance.

Short, upbeat sessions + fun challenges + consistency help pups tune back in.

Ever had your adolescent pup suddenly pretend you don’t exist?

🐶 One minute they’re nailing a cue, the next… total blank stare.

It’s not stubbornness — their brain is busy cataloging smells, sights, and sounds.

Skip the cue-repeat marathon. Step a little closer, make it easier, celebrate the quick win. Small, positive moments stack up into big progress.

👉 When was the last time your pup surprised you with what they noticed instead of you?

Did you know your puppy’s zoomies, barking, or chewing might be more about 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 than bad behavior?

Here’s one small step to ease the chaos:

👉 Try a frozen treat. Fill a Kong or sturdy toy with peanut butter, plain yogurt, or some soft food and freeze it. This turns snack time into a focused, soothing activity that keeps your puppy’s brain engaged — and gives you a few quiet minutes too.

🙌 You don’t have to overhaul your whole day. Just one thoughtful moment like this can make a difference — for both of you.

Feeling short on time or energy today?

You’re not alone — and your puppy doesn’t need perfection, just presence.

Here’s a super simple way to keep your pup mentally engaged:

🎯 Sniff & Seek Game: Toss a few pieces of your puppy’s kibble or favorite treats around the room and let them hunt! Start with easy-to-spot spots like the corner of a rug or behind a table leg.

You’re tapping into your puppy’s natural scenting ability, encouraging problem-solving — and giving them a fun “job” to do.

🧠 Bonus: Mental work can be more tiring than a long walk. Seriously!

No fancy setup. No pressure. Just a tiny shift that supports a calm, curious pup (and a more peaceful home).

When your puppy’s energy is off the charts, here’s a simple, effective strategy that does so much at once:
✔️ Soothes chewing urges
✔️ Encourages independent play
✔️ Provides mental stimulation
✔️ Keeps them cool in the summer heat

🎉 Just fill a food toy (like a Kong or Toppl) with a blend of puppy-safe ingredients, then freeze it for a refreshing enrichment activity.

➡️ Tip: Blend or mash your ingredients, spoon into the toy, and pop it in the freezer.

Rotate recipes to keep things interesting!

This isn’t just a treat — it’s an opportunity to teach your puppy how to settle, focus, and enjoy quiet time.

Hi, it’s me — your puppy.

👋 When I chew your shoes or bark at shadows, I’m not trying to be bad. I just have a lot of thoughts and energy and curiosity… and I don’t always know what to do with it.

Sometimes I need more than just a walk or a toy. I need little brain games, sniffs, and time with you that helps me learn how the world works.

So next time I’m zooming around the living room like a squirrel on espresso, maybe we could try a sniff game or a frozen treat? I’d love that.

🐾 Thanks for loving me even when I’m a lot. I’m still learning. And with you on my side, I’ll grow into someone amazing.

💛 — Your not-so-naughty pup

Why Puppy Challenges?

So many people get a new puppy (or rescue dog) and quickly find themselves in over their heads.

  • Either their puppy is very different from the last puppy they raised and they don’t know where to start with the new puppy.

  • Or they are first-time dog owners and don’t understand how to begin to communicate with their new puppy.

  • Or they have an idea how to get their new puppy started but the puppy just doesn’t seem to be getting it.
