Pelvic floor therapy is so beneficial to many women. But sometimes not knowing what is going to happen when you finally make your first appointment can be nerve-wracking!

So here are some things that you can do to prepare for your first pelvic floor evaluation.

1. Have an initial consultation with your provider to find out more about them and what their process is. This will help you to become more comfortable with them and be more in the know about what to expect.

2. Be prepared by listing out your symptoms, when symptoms first started, what makes them better, and what makes them worse.

3. Be aware that based on your symptoms, there may be an internal/external pelvic exam with your consent to better evaluate your issues.

4. It's helpful to wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely

5. Make a list of any questions you may have about the treatment process

"I feel like something is falling out of me every time I go to the bathroom."

"I feel fine in the morning, but by the end of the day it feels like there is a lot of pressure in my vagina."

"It feels like there is a tampon falling out, but I'm not wearing one."

^^These are all ways patients with pelvic organ prolapse have described their symptoms to me. Do any of them sound like you?

Pelvic organ prolapse happens when organs in the pelvis (uterus, bladder, bowel) fall from their normal position and push into the vagina. This can be an uncomfortable and unsettling experience if you don't know what it is. But don't fret! This is a treatable condition! 🙌

Working with a pelvic floor therapist can help to resolve symptoms and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles to prevent further slipping.

I often get asked if I take insurance.

The answer: No- and here's why.

A cash-based practice allows me to practice with my patient's best interests in mind.

It allows me to spend as much time as I feel is needed with my patients and treating the areas I know need to be treated based on my knowledge without the rules and restrictions insurance companies inflict on therapy services.

A cash-based practice also allows me to treat any new symptoms that may arise during the course of your treatments with me.

When insurance companies come into play, my hands become tied by rules, treatment and diagnosis codes, and limitations on reimbursement for the time I spend with you. In the end, it ends up hurting the patient because I am unable to treat you in the best possible way.

However, when going to a cash-based facility, you can submit your bills to your insurance company for reimbursement of any services that are provided to you.

Back pain and pelvic floor dysfunction often go together.

But why is this?

The pelvic floor muscles sit in your pelvis and pretty much support everything above them--That's a whole lot of spine and organs! They also help to control posture and stabilize the body during daily movements.

When the pelvic floor muscles are not working properly, either from weakness, tightness, or are out of sync with the body's internal pressure system, everything above it becomes unstable and often results in back pain.

Dysfunction in the pelvic muscles can also refer pain to the low-back, often leading to misdiagnosis.

Let’s talk hemorrhoids…

They can be so annoying! The burning and the itching are enough to make anyone go crazy.

Here are a few tips for finding relief for those annoying hemorrhoids.

💩 Avoid straining on the toilet by doing diaphragmatic breathing while trying to have a BM

🚽 A squatty potty is a great way to put your body into an optimal position for a smooth BM

🚿 Using a peribottle or a bidet if you happen to have one to clean yourself up after, which can help reduce tissue irritation from wiping

🧴 Place a few drops of peppermint essential oil drops in the toilet before you go for a soothing effect & to decrease strain during your BM
