Nitazenes may be new to many people, but they’re already driving deadly overdoses across the country. These synthetic opioids are so powerful that even tiny amounts can overwhelm the body and cause life-threatening effects. To make matters worse, they often don’t show up on standard drug screens—making detection difficult.

The good news: naloxone can still reverse these overdoses and save lives.

The rise of substances like this underscores the urgent need for education around naloxone and overdose prevention, as well as accessible and effective long-term treatment. By raising awareness and expanding access to care, we can save lives and support recovery.

During Mental Illness Awareness Week, we recognize that many people in recovery face not only substance use disorder but also mental health challenges. When these conditions occur together - known as co-occurring disorders - understanding the connection is essential. Treating both at the same time leads to stronger outcomes, greater stability and a healthier future.
