So I had a really really hard personal day. It involves my senior dog who got a really sad diagnosis.

Anyways, I opened up my mail to find this incredible gift from my client ❤️

I have always quoted Frozen’s “The Next Right Thing” to clients… kind of joking but also… mostly not.

In birth, there are a million decisions we can make. Sometimes to the point of not being able to actually make the decision. Some call it “analysis paralysis”. We can go down every “well if I do X, it COULD cause Y, which COULD cause Z” route to the point where we’re overwhelmed. Sometimes you just gotta “take a step” and do “the next right thing”. It’s so cheesy, I know. But stick with me…

What feels right to you, right now? What is your gut telling you is the best decision? Because that’s what you have control over. You can’t necessarily control how it might impact the outcome. You do the best with the information you currently have.

As a woman of faith, I also believe we are not powerful enough to mess up God’s plans for us. I always remind clients “He goes before you… He knows the EXACT outcome of this birth”.

This was the perfect gift for me today. We’re going to have to make some tough decisions with our pup moving forward and it was such a sweet reminder that we can only do the best we can.

Thank you so much, Becki. It means more than you’ll ever know ❤️

Another 3-peat client met her baby last night in the comfort of her home with 2 midwives who stood back, watching and waiting. Only quietly stepping in to listen to baby and offer support when the mom asked for it.

This baby made her work! She did amazing and as always, I’m in awe that I get to be invited into a space like this. Thanks for letting me be part of your story for the third time!

A very special client of mine (a 3-peat) got to meet her sweet baby a few days ago! I’ve been at 2 of her other births (both VBACs). This was a slightly unplanned CS after an ECV didn’t turn baby… it was a wild ride but she navigated all the twists and turns thrown at her.

BUMC in downtown Dallas helped accommodate her birth plan. She had multiple nurses backing her and communicating with others in the OR to make sure she was able to see and hold baby ASAP. Her midwife (one of my favorite people in the world, w/ .dfw ) went to bat for her on multiple occasions.

Here is an incredible anesthesiologist who took the time to chat with her before her epidural placement and then came to visit her right before they started her surgery to make sure she was feeling comfortable. The CRNA that was in the OR with her was WONDERFUL! He kept her informed along the way and made sure she was feeling okay both physically and emotionally.

The Lord provided the best people. I am so THANKFUL for the group at BUMC who regularly goes above and beyond for their patients. No hospital is perfect but BUMC is doing SO MANY good things to support patient autonomy and informed consent.

Thank you for allowing me to support you in one of the most intimate moments. Thank you for allowing me to pray over you before surgery. Thank you for trusting me to be in the room with you. I love you and your family so much and am SO proud of you!

Happy Mother’s Day, you beautiful mommas! (With 10 minutes to spare in Texas!)

Happy Mother’s Day to the moms who…
-Get to celebrate with all their babies today
-Are doing all of the things to try to be a mom
-Have a baby (or babies) waiting for them in eternity
-Have stepped in to be a mom to someone who needed a home
-Are single moms working their tails off to provide for their family
-Are stepmoms
-Are stay-at-home moms
-Are working moms
-Have a complex relationship with their children
-Are filling in as moms until their kids can be reunified with their parents
-Are birth mothers that made the difficult and sacrificial decision to allow another mother to raise her child(ren)

Being a mother, in so many forms, is one of the highest callings there is. Being trusted with the lives of tiny people is no small feat!

I’m so thankful to get to walk alongside so many of you during your journey into and through motherhood.

Well, here’s my reason for pausing on clients. Baby Bilton coming late September-ish 2025! Told y’all it was exciting 😘

It does work most of the time… but not always. Sometimes our babies need to be born differently, sometimes we need interventions and an extra set of hands to help a baby out, sometimes we need medication to save a momma from bleeding too much, etc.

Having a trusted support team and leaning into your intuition are some of the most important factors in birth ending well.

My favorite comment:

“A million YES'. Ive been saying for a while that trusting birth doesn't mean trusting it blindly - it means trusting birth to tell us the truth - even if that means that it's just not working.”

i’ve seen lots of birthworkers posting their awesome stats from last year and i briefly considered sharing mine, but decided otherwise.

since returning to school, i’ve seen some really wild things. i’ve also seen countless beautiful, buttery births that i’d love to rave about, but what i really learned in midwifery over the past year is this: birth doesn’t always work.

so here are some of the things i experienced this year, the good and the bad, because out of hospital birth isn’t all sunshine and rainbows all the time:

💫 i caught my first baby this year! and then ten more.

💫 i managed my first full resus (for over 15 minutes until EMS finally intubated and took over, which felt like fu***ng forever)

💫 i’ve been a part of over 50 birth stories

💫 my littlest baby was 5.5 lbs and my largest was 12 lbs!

💫 i helped a new mom take pictures of her full term stillborn baby girl

💫 i saw 6 shoulder dystocias (3 within a month of one another)

💫 i welcomed two new earthlings with extra fingers (in the same month!!) 🤚🏻 ✋🏻

💫 i had FIVE babies in a row present with thick meconium 💩

💫 i helped 30 people with their first latch 💧

💫 i saw and managed some massive hemorrhages (2+ liters) 🩸

💫 i successfully placed 3 IVs and have performed over 100 blood draws 💉

💫 i witnessed a suspected placental abruption managed at home (by necessity, an ambulance was on the way) and everyone was okay 🚑

💫 i saw (and heard 🤮) one life-saving episiotomy ✂️

💫 i helped over 10 first time mamas welcomes their babes and helped someone meet their 12th!!

and literally so much more, y’all. the universe has given me many opportunities to learn and grow this year and i am still here, scrapping my way through the end of school. so here’s to 2025!!! a year hopefully filled with lots of butter and my fu***ng midwifery license 🧡🎉

My name is Caty Bilton! I am the proud wife to Kyle Bilton and momma to Audrey (4) and Presley (1). I have a passion for breastfeeding and birth work (duh). Women are facing unnecessary complications in birth that stem from not knowing their options.

As a doula, I help facilitate conversations and build bridges between an expectant parent, their partner, and health care team. I am there to support a laboring individual and their partner both physically and emotionally before, during, and after labor.

My story: My first birth was difficult and traumatic. It ultimately ended in an “emergency c-section” which devastated me. After looking back on everything that took place, I realized every decision my provider led me to make set me up for failure. I knew I wanted to attempt a VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarian) after finding out I was pregnant with my second so I put together an excellent birth team which included a doula and a team of midwives. My VBAC went perfectly thanks in huge part to my doula. She was there to support me during my 36 hour labor (yeah, exhausting). After seeing the difference she made during my birth, I knew I wanted to make that same difference for other women.
