Did you know cavities are contagious? 🦷
The bacteria that cause tooth decay (Streptococcus mutans) can be passed from caregivers to children through saliva. Moms are often the primary source, but any caregiver can transmit it.
Common ways transmission happens:
• Sharing spoons or utensils
• Cleaning a pacifier with your mouth
• Kissing on the lips
• Any saliva contact
If a caregiver has untreated cavities or high bacteria levels, the risk of transmission increases.
👶 Transmission can occur even before the first teeth appear (around 6 months).
🕒 The biggest risk window is birth to age 3, when a child’s oral microbiome is still developing.
During this time, bacteria colonize easily. After age 3, the oral microbiome becomes more stable.
Caregivers also pass along habits — frequent sugar exposure and poor oral hygiene increase cavity risk.
