And while we're at it, here's another common misconception: Even though we celebrate July 4 as the date of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the actual signing took place over several days, primarily on August 2l. You learn something new every day!

Avoid the san serif fonts such as Arial. Why? They use one letter for both lower case Ll and upper case Ii, causing needless confusion for developing readers and spellers. 😩 Test your font with the state name Illinois to find a font that puts the top and bottom on the capital i ‼️

As thanks to @taralaser for a creative #Storystorm, I chose her book THE CAPITAL CASE for my #HaikuFromTwo challenge presented by @amandadavis_art. If you haven't read this book illus. by Ross MacDonald, find it and read it now.
The two words I chose:
Cursive • Detective
Cursive loops I love
I cannot read it now though
Detective needed

FAQ❓- Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) is NOT a tutor!

CALT is a professional credential to describe an individual who has the expertise to provide services to individuals who have difficulty acquiring the basic language skills necessary to read, write and spell.

CALTs have a deep knowledge of the structure of the English language and the experience to apply these skills in creating an individualized plan for the remediation of dyslexia and related learning differences.

In honor of Dyslexia Awareness Month, I’ll be attending an all day seminar by Peter Wright. Wright’s law work focuses on special education and advocacy. As a licensed special education teacher, I am already familiar with much of the law and IEP process, but I want to be better equipped to approach it from the angle of an advocate. These books arrived in the mail this weekend to prepare for the seminar. I can’t wait to dig in!

LeDerick Horne reads The Alphabet Wars, a story of dyslexia. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=618455412110360

Join us for this special Storytime of The Alphabet War, narrated by LeDerick Horne — a performance poet, an advocate for people with disabilities, and our Outside The Lunchbox Luncheon keynote speaker. As we jump into the pages of The Alphabet War we’ll follow Adam from his first days in Kindergarten, where the teacher wanted him to learn about letters. But “p” looked like “q,” and “b” looked like “d.” We'll follow Adam's journey through 4th grade, when he learned that he could excel in other things and he gained the confidence to take chances with reading. One day he found himself reading a book all by himself!

Stay tuned through the end of the reading for a special message from LeDerick Horne about his outlook on reading publicly and how it relates to his performance poetry.

Do you ever think about how people often use fancy Latin adjectives for spring (vernal) and fall (autumnal), but not summer and winter? Well, we do! For Etymonday, we decided to get to the bottom of it.

(Pictured: Emily paints with the word "autumnal" in Word Worlds, a gallery where you'll paint vivid scenes with words instead of colors.)

Though they’re not commonly used, the adjective for “wintery” is “hibernal” and “summery” is “estival.” Sound familiar?

Hibernal is, in fact, related to hibernate, meaning “to pass the winter in a torpid or resting state” (thanks @merriamwebster).

And estival sounds like festival, right? But it’s misleading!

Festival comes from “festivus,” which means “festive” or “merry,” while “estival” comes from “aestas,” meaning summer.

If it’s any consolation, “aestas” gives us the excellent word “estivate,” which is basically the warm-weather version of hibernation (and likely what most of us have been doing this hot hot DC summer).

So there you have it! Enjoy the rest of this estival season—or estivate until it’s time for fall (we won’t judge).
