Dear Dr Bell,
Five years ago today was my cancer surgery. It was a terrible experience- I went to sleep for a hysterectomy and woke up missing my spleen, colon, appendix, had a hysterectomy, they “debulked”, and I had to have an ostomy. Evidently early in the surgery they realized you were needed, and you did lots!!!
The following months were painful, embarrassing, scary, and depressing. But you hung in there with me and we were able to have that reversal surgery exactly three months later. As far as my being in the hospital the entire fall of 203 (pretty much), since then I have only had one admission, and that was in early days. Now I have a flex sig every 3 months with Dr Mauk here in Houston and just keep on going! My cancer has remained in remission. I am on Ibrance, Faslodex shots, and Anastrozole. My numbers remain in the normal range. Most people with metastatic cancer are given a prognosis of 2-5 years. The worst thing is that I have put on too much weight, and will not be quite so thin at my daughter’s June wedding in Richardson.
So today I am 5 years into life with metastatic cancer.I am grateful to you for your precise surgery and thoughtful decisions, and for working with me as we began this journey. Thank you for your superb care.
