Dear Parents and Friends,
We are happy to announce that we have added a new full-time Speech-Language Therapist, Mrs. Jaclyn Upchurch! Mrs. Jaclyn earned her Graduate Degree from Baylor University in 2020. She is interested in working with elementary children with language disorders and is passionate about helping kids be successful in the classroom and the world around them.

Jaclyn chose to work with children because of the joy and laughter they bring each day! She believes that therapy should be fun and functional, and that parent education is crucial for each child's success! She is excited to strengthen her skills as a speech language pathologist and to serve families in this area of Dallas.

In her free time, Jaclyn and her husband love to be outdoors! She enjoys hiking and running along trails or sitting in the park for a picnic. Another fun hobby she has is water coloring at coffee shops with friends!
Jaclyn is eager to help your child move through the therapy process and looks forward to developing a relationship with your family.

Today begins "Children's Mental Health Awareness" week (Feb 3-9). Just as adults can have a difficult time coping with situations, especially in our current world, so do children. It is vital to not overlook their mental health, and recognize the value of checking in with our children frequently. Often times, knowing that someone truly cares, and takes the time to understand them on their level is what makes the biggest difference in their young lives. Let's help our young kids flourish to be all they are capable of by checking in with them on a consistent basis.

Well November is National Family Literacy Month! So get your blankets, loved ones, and snuggle up with a good book this month!! Here are some ways to encourage reading for your family:

#FamilyLiteracyMonth

1. Set aside a little time for reading every day, even if it’s only for 15 or so minutes.
2. Go through both old and new books, and set some of your favorites around the house. They make cute decorations, and maybe one of the kids will pick one up and start reading!
3. Take a few trips to the library.
4. Read your child the book version of their favorite movie. If they can read on their own, encourage them to read it!
5. Start a book club with friends and family.
6. Participate in a book drive and donate old or used books you no longer need. This will help families in need read to their kids.

Speech Cue cards for FREE Download:

http://www.preliteracy.com/images/Printables/speech%20cue%20cards.pdf

This Speech Cue program was developed by Rachel Betzen, M.A., CCC/SLP. It is used as a tool in speech therapy, and as an early reading instruction program.

This program is similar to hand cues SLPs have use in speech therapy for a long time. Our Speech Cue Cards combine the hand movement, mouth shape, and the letter. The use of letters with Speech Cue Cards allows them to be used for early phonics activities and sequencing letters into short words.

Use of Speech Cues detailed on our Speech Cue Cards in therapy has been particularly helpful for students with articulation errors, phonological disorders and apraxia of speech. An added benefit, is that children are learning the letters that match with sounds, and are furthering their pre-reading skills as they progress in speech therapy.

Visit www.preliteracy.com for further details and Terms of Use for this free program. We have information available for: Parents, Speech-Language Therapists, and Teachers or those who create Early Childhood Curriculum. We have a guide on how to incorporate Speech Cues into Speech Therapy, or ways to use them in Pre-Literacy Instruction and Curriculum.
