In honor of Black History Month, we are honoring our black saints and holy figures like Blessed Marie-Clémentine Anuarite Nengapeta. Born in Congo in 1939, she became a religious sister with the Holy Family Sisters and lived with deep faith during a time of civil war. In 1964, rebels attacked her convent, and she was assaulted and killed for refusing violence and remaining faithful. Even in her final moments, she proclaimed forgiveness: “I forgive you for you do not know what you do.” Beatified by Pope St. John Paul II in 1985, her life remains a profound testament to courage, mercy and the power of forgiveness.

Herbert Perkins never expected a routine checkup to reveal a life-threatening heart condition, but the quick action of his care team changed everything. After years of staying active and feeling his best, a concerning blood pressure reading led to tests that showed severe blockages in his arteries requiring immediate surgery. Because Alexandria has offered advanced heart care for more than fifty years, Herbert received the treatment he needed close to home without delay. He underwent triple bypass surgery the same day as his diagnosis. Herbert says the coordinated care felt like someone telling him, "I’m going to take care of you," and that reassurance carried him through recovery. Today, he encourages others to keep their checkups, listen to their doctors, and trust the heart care available right here in Alexandria.

This Black History Month, we are celebrating the strength, perseverance, and achievements that have shaped generations and continue to move communities forward. For Eneatra Anderson, recognizing Black History Month is essential in showing that perseverance, grit, and hard work make it possible to overcome challenges, no matter the obstacles. “The importance of celebrating the resilience of Black Americans is important to show that with hard work, grit, and tenacity, no matter what is thrown your way, you can overcome. Black History highlights the accomplishments of many brave men and women who overcame tough challenges and made things better for all humankind”. When celebrating Black History Month, Eneatra recognizes the lasting impact of resilience and achievement.

In honor of Black History Month, we are celebrating our black saints and holy figures like Saint Charles Lwanga. One of the 22 Ugandan martyrs, Saint Charles Lwanga is the patron of youth and Catholic action in much of tropical Africa. In the royal court of Uganda, he courageously protected fellow young pages from immoral demands and strengthened them in their faith during imprisonment. Baptized shortly before his death, Charles inspired others to remain faithful and steadfast. He was martyred by burning on June 3, 1886, and his legacy continues to inspire courage, purity and devotion among generations of believers.

Our cardiac rehab programs are designed to support healing, confidence, and long‑term heart health after a cardiac event. The results are powerful! Patients who complete cardiac rehab have up to a 30% reduction in hospital readmissions and live longer than those who don’t.
Along with physical recovery and strength, patients benefit from connecting with others who have shared similar experiences, creating a community of support and encouragement.
We’re proud to walk alongside our patients as they rebuild their health and live stronger, fuller lives.

Pam Carrier spent years living with unexplained tightness, choking sensations, and dizziness before learning she had AFib, a heart rhythm condition that can greatly increase the risk of stroke or heart failure. After receiving the Watchman™ procedure, a small implant that seals the left atrial appendage, she finally found relief and regained the confidence to return to her daily life. Her husband, Kenneth, was later diagnosed with AFib as well, but his symptoms looked very different and were discovered through a home heart monitor. Because blood thinners caused severe bleeding for him, his cardiologist recommended the Watchman™ as a safer long-term option. The procedure helped stop his bleeding issues, improve his energy, and strengthen his heart function. Now Pam and Kenneth are feeling like themselves again. They look forward to returning to their hobbies and planning the Hawaii trip they've always dreamed of.

This Black History Month, we are celebrating a century of resilience, progress and education by honoring the transformational impact of Black people’s work throughout the U.S., Africa and the Diaspora. We recognize the accomplishments and significant contributions of our Associates across our ministries and the communities we serve. For Del Shankle, System Director of Enterprise Print & Brand Services, this recognition serves as a powerful reminder that possibility exists regardless of where a journey begins. “Celebrating a century of resilience, progress and education during Black History Month is essential because it reminds future generations that anything is possible—no matter where their journey begins.”

In honor of Black History Month, we are celebrating our black saints and holy figures like Mother Elizabeth Clarisse Lange, OSP. Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange (1784–1882), born in the Caribbean, immigrated to Baltimore where she opened a school in her home for impoverished Black children. Guided by deep faith and courage, she founded the Oblate Sisters of Providence in 1829, the first religious order for women of African descent in the Catholic Church. Despite poverty and racism, she dedicated her life to educating Black children, caring for orphans, nursing the sick and supporting formerly enslaved people. Her life is a powerful example of generosity and commitment to serving others.
