"Why, as a society, do we not talk about mental health issues? Our mental health can be the driving factor for peace or unrest with action or inaction to follow. Every individual will experience some mental health issue in their life, the severity and the factors just look different, and most don't seek help or talk about it. If I see that I am out of balance, I have to seek information. What am I doing that is not working, what am I doing that is working, along with what is completely out of my control? Do I need to ask for help? Do I need to take responsibility for self-care the best I can while seeking help? Our bodies talk to us, and emotional and physical pain is a signal. If someone breaks their leg, they don't just go about their daily routine and ignore it. Most will go to a doctor. If they don't, the entire body suffers. Mental health works the same way. Sometimes all it takes is a check-in. There may be an immediate solution. However, sometimes it requires professional intervention. Life on life's terms is difficult for most, as I have learned in my own life. Circumstances change, life happens, children grow up, people leave us, and we can be faced with situations that alone we cannot navigate. So, ask for help. It helps with this thing called life!" - Clinical Director, Shea Hetherington-Barakatt, LCSW, LCDC. #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth
