Does Your Husband Snore?

A good night’s sleep is one of the most important things for maintaining the health of your body. Sleep has many physiological benefits, including strengthening your immune system and preventing such diseases as anxiety, depression, and even cancer. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is the phase in which you are dreaming, and it is key for memory consolidation, in which your brain converts new memories into long-term ones.
However, even if you sleep for 8 hours, you may not actually be getting 8 hours of restful sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition in which your airways are blocked, resulting in a lack of restful, REM sleep. This condition is often caused by your tongue going into the back of your throat or your muscles relaxing too much, resulting in blockage of your airways. When your brain senses that you’re not getting enough oxygen, it disrupts your REM sleep to reopen your airways, resulting in your body starting a new sleep cycle and never getting the resting benefits of the previous one.
Risk factors for sleep apnea include: overweight/obesity, neck size (shirt collar size) of 18 or above for men and 16 or above for women. Sleep apnea is typically characterized by snoring and daytime sleepiness.
If you’re consistently sleeping for 8 hours a night and still wake up feeling tired, you need to talk to your doctor about possible sleep apnea. The only ways to distinguish normal snoring from snoring associated with obstructive sleep apnea are a sleep study, in which you go into a facility where they monitor your sleep, or a sleep test to be done at home. Ask your doctor about which option is right for you if you think you might have sleep apnea. There are also some useful apps that you can download on your smartphone, such as SnoreLab that monitor your sleep and can determine if you have sleep apnea, but these are not as accurate as sleep studies or sleep tests.
Treatments for sleep apnea include: weight loss, sleeping on your side, mouth guard (aka dental device – pulls your jaw forward to prevent your tongue from going to the back), outpatient laser therapy (noninvasive therapy to shrink the back of your throat to stop your tongue from obstructing your airways), CPAP machines, or surgery. Talk to your doctor about which treatment method is right for you.
Sleep is very important for your body. Without it, you will not function at your best. It is impossible to lose weight or form lots of memories if you aren’t allowing your body to recuperate at night. Talk to your doctor or come see us at Southwest Family Medicine to get better sleep.

Let’s keep up with the trend of things I’d never do as a doctor OR patient — some of which might surprise you!

Do you ever wake up feeling like you didn't sleep at all? Do you snore? If so, you may have sleep apnea!

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. If you snore loudly and feel tired even after a full night's sleep, you might have sleep apnea.

The main types of sleep apnea are:

-Obstructive sleep apnea, the more common form that occurs when throat muscles relax

-Central sleep apnea, which occurs when your brain doesn't send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing

-Complex sleep apnea syndrome, also known as treatment-emergent central sleep apnea, which occurs when someone has both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea

If you think you might have sleep apnea, see your doctor. Treatment can ease your symptoms and might help prevent heart problems and other complications.

Not only does today mark the start of a new week, but it also marks the start of a new month. This month as you read through our posts, blogs and even talk to us in office you will notice one consistent theme: Transformation.

We want you to feel empowered to transform your life from the inside out. Whether that means working with Lizzy, our wellness coach or coming in for a consultation with Cheryl, our Laser Specialist - we are here for YOU every step of your journey.

How are you hoping to transform this month?

Are you dehydrated?

Dehydration means your body loses more fluids than you take in. If it's not treated, it can get worse and become a serious problem.

Symptoms of dehydration in adults and children include:

-feeling thirsty
-dark yellow and strong-smelling pee
-feeling dizzy or lightheaded
-feeling tired
-a dry mouth, lips and eyes
-peeing little, and fewer than 4 times a day

Dehydration can happen more easily if you have:

-vomiting or diarrhea
-been in the sun too long (heatstroke)
-drunk too much alcohol
-sweated too much after exercising
-a high temperature of 38C or more
-been taking medicines that make you pee more (diuretics)

Drink fluids when you feel any dehydration symptoms.

If you find it hard to drink because you feel sick or have been sick, start with small sips and then gradually drink more.

You can use a spoon to make it easier for your child to swallow the fluids.

You should drink enough during the day so your pee is a pale clear color.

Drink when there's a higher risk of dehydrating. For example, if you're vomiting, sweating or you have diarrhea.

How often do you check your blood pressure?

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is one of the most common health conditions plaguing American adults. And as a key risk factor for heart disease — the world's leading killer — it's also one of the most dangerous.

Here is why need to check it regularly:

1. The ‘silent killer’ rarely comes with symptoms
The only way to know for sure if you have high blood pressure is to check your numbers. If you are 40 or older, you should be doing this at least once a year, federal guidelines state.

2. Your risk for high blood pressure increases with age
Several factors can drive up a person's risk for developing hypertension. People with diabetes and obesity, for example, are more likely to develop high blood pressure.

3. The ‘new normal’ may be lower than you think
The definition of high blood pressure has changed in recent years. Before 2017, anything below 140/90 mm Hg was considered OK. Now, a blood pressure at or above 130/80 mm Hg is deemed high, according to updated guidelines from the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.

4. Risks are low when it comes to lowering blood pressure
Clinicians have a tendency to be more cautious when it comes to treating hypertension in older adults, who are more likely to have multiple chronic conditions and are at increased risk for falls, Michos says. (Dizziness and lightheadedness can be symptoms of blood pressure that's too low.) But recent research shows that fear is a bit unfounded.
