The doctor asked the patient to start in the middle and to make a spiral. The handwritten spiral on the left was from a patient with Essential Tremor, while the image on the right was from a patient with no tremor. Can you imagine what it would be like if you were the person with the tremor and a man, to try to shave with a double bladed razor, or to put lipstick on without smearing? Pretty hard. How about bringing hot soup to your lips with a spoon? Pretty messy. These tremors occur sporadically or in an inherited dominant (1 out of 2 affected) fashion. It usually slowly worsens with ageing. The tremor is usually quieted by alcohol, the response of which, is nearly diagnostic of Essential Tremor. To learn more, read my book about Essential Tremor, Volume 4 in the Mini Neurology Series.
