How To Listen To Your Feelings As Messengers

How To Listen To Your Feelings As Messengers You may think your experiences aren’t bad enough to deserve compassion. You may constantly compare your struggle to others’. You may think feeling bad is a weakness of willpower. You may feel helpless and hopeless when you have negative feelings, but you can’t make yourself immune to pain.

Here's a Sneak Peak at one of the presenters at the 2021 Compassion Conference.

Sneak Peek!

A Teacher's Perspective: Antonia Moran

As an English and (occasional) French teacher, Antonia Moran has been dancing around Compassion Science for at least two decades, but only discovered it explicitly about five years ago. For over twenty years, she has had the opportunity to teach texts that illustrate and encourage empathy and compassion and highlight our common humanity, be it that of her students or that of the characters they are encountering. She revels in the "concreteness" that neuroscience has to offer those students who may be skeptical of the power of compassion to impact their overall well-being. She weaves compassion and mindful meditation into her classes and has presented on the power of compassion, mindfulness, meditation, and gratitude to students and faculty at ESD, where she has taught since 2007. She helped co-found a Faculty Mindfulness Program in the fall of 2020 and plans to begin a student Self-Compassion Club in August. She earned her BA in French and English Literature at UCLA, her MA in English at Stanford, and has recently become a certified mindfulness facilitator. She is currently pursuing a MS in Applied Cognition and Neuroscience at UT Dallas and interning as a research assistant at the UT Dallas Center for Brain Health in order to understand and transmit the brain science that underpins compassion’s powerful impact on one’s overall well-being – and on that of society as a whole. She lives in Dallas with her husband and three sons and loves research, meditation, jogging, and watching her sons play their multitudinous sports.

"Harnessing Compassion to Prompt Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging in Schools: a Teacher's Perspective."
Antonia's session will explore the powerful nature of compassion as an agent to transform schools into more equitable, inclusive places, and to help students feel a stronger sense of belonging. She will address the importance of feelings of safety (within the self, with others, within the community), reciprocity (the compassionate actor not as "savior" but as "partner"), and active contribution. She also plans to discuss basic neuroscience of compassion, meditation and journaling techniques, plus active ways students and teachers can connect curriculum to compassion.

Noticing what you need and then asking for it: Self-compassion 101 - CMSC Like so many other women, my fierce self-compassion is still very much a work in progress. But I’m getting better at the self-awareness part. And so, for today, I practice self compassion by congratulating myself on how far I have come – and I refuse to beat myself up over how far I have yet to ...

Why The Army is Training in Mindfulness - Mindful

"As we started this practice of mindfulness what we quickly learned it really wasn’t for recovery, it was performance enhancing. It taught us how to regulate our stress and to be in the very moment, to be at our very best when things are on the line, and to be there. "
