LOW TESTOSTERONE OR HIGH STRESS?

What most men don't know…

Testosterone and cortisol work like a seesaw. When stress goes up, testosterone often goes down. That’s not just bad news for libido, it also affects energy, mood, metabolism, and muscle maintenance.

When you're under constant stress, your body prioritizes making cortisol over testosterone, using the same raw materials to fuel the stress response. This accelerates fatigue, weight gain, and irritability.

Here’s how you change that.

Start the day with sunlight and movement. This lowers cortisol and supports natural testosterone rhythms.

If you’re experiencing stubborn weight gain, low energy, or brain fog, it’s time to partner with a medical professional. Hormone optimization isn’t about vanity…it’s about vitality.

Be sure you're following along for more tips to feel like yourself again after 40.

Yesterday was International Day of Yoga, and we’re celebrating more than flexibility.

We’re celebrating all the ways that we can optimize our lifestyle to make vitality in our 40s and beyond possible

Yoga has been shown to:
Improve cognition and memory
Reduce insulin resistance
Lower cortisol (the stress hormone)
Support balanced s*x hormones during perimenopause and menopause

One study showed regular yoga practice led to significantly lower cortisol levels and improved insulin sensitivity. Another linked yoga to enhanced executive function and memory, especially in women navigating midlife hormonal shifts.

In my practice, I am always encouraging my patients to implement holistic strategies. Yoga alongside personalized nutrition, medical support, and sustainable movement, for women and men seeking energy, focus, and vitality in their 40s and beyond is extremely helpful.

Your hormone health isn’t just about your prescriptions. It’s also in your daily rhythm, rituals, and rest.

Be sure you’re following for more ways to leverage holistic strategies in your wellness plan.

Happy Father's Day!

We celebrate the dads, grandfathers, and father figures who show up with strength, wisdom, and quiet resilience.

But behind the scenes, too many are silently battling fatigue, mood swings, and stubborn weight gain, dismissing it as "just aging."

Here’s the truth...
These aren’t signs of weakness. They’re signs of hormonal or metabolic imbalance—signals your body is sending that deserve to be heard.

In my practice, I offer physician-led, data-driven solutions to help men in midlife reclaim their energy, strength, and vitality.

Because being strong for others starts with being well yourself.

What an expanding waistline may be telling us and why it matters even if we still feel good in our clothes...

Weight gain around the midsection isn’t just about how our clothes fit. It can be an early sign of insulin resistance, when the body starts struggling to manage blood sugar effectively.

That matters more than many of us realize. Growing evidence links insulin resistance not only to type 2 diabetes, but also to Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, some experts now refer to Alzheimer’s as “Type 3 diabetes” because of this powerful connection.

So, here's hone practical way we can support both metabolic and brain health.

Build meals around protein and fiber. These nutrients help keep blood sugar steady, reduce insulin spikes, and protect long-term vitality.

In my practice, I support weight loss and lifestyle changes that strengthen the body and the brain without extreme diets or guesswork.

One thing most women aren’t told about life in your 40s and beyond is...

The shift in estrogen and progesterone during perimenopause can affect the brain long before hot flashes show up. Mood changes, memory glitches, trouble focusing can all be early signs of hormonal shifts impacting your brain health.

Here’s the truth. Brain care starts before symptoms begin.

You can support your brain now by:

Making sure your hormones are balanced.

Getting daily sunlight to help regulate your circadian rhythm (which supports cognition and mood).

Prioritizing high-quality sleep to support memory consolidation.

Don’t wait until you feel “off” to take action. Midlife doesn’t have to mean mental fog.

One thing that surprises people about my work is...

Even though I’m an OBGYN, I also see male patients.

Why? Because midlife weight gain, fatigue, and brain fog don’t only affect women.

Men in their 40s and beyond can also experience hormonal changes that throw off their energy, focus, sleep, and metabolism. And yet—most don’t think to check their hormones.

Getting your hormones tested isn’t just for women.
It’s one of the most overlooked steps in helping men feel like themselves again.

Your health matters, too.
Don’t ignore the signs just because they crept in slowly.

Menopause isn’t the beginning of a slow decline—it's the start of a new chapter.
And with the right blend of hormone optimization, nutrition, and lifestyle strategies, you don’t have to just “deal with it.” You can thrive.

But here’s the truth: guessing your way through it, trying every supplement on the shelf, or copying someone else’s routine won’t get you the results you deserve.

I’ve helped countless women realize that menopause didn’t mean the end of feeling vibrant. It meant it was time for a more personalized, informed approach.

When you're not feeling like yourself and none of the usual strategies work for you, I urge you to work with a professional who can help you reclaim your energy, clarity, and confidence without the guesswork.

I’m always telling powerhouse women who feel like stress is just a part of the high-demand lifestyle they lead the same thing.

You don’t have to quit your job or walk away from your responsibilities to protect your health. There is a way to manage the effects of stress on your bodycwithout pressing pause on your life.

One of the simplest and most effective strategies I recommend to get cortisol under control is this...

Breathe!

Not just any breathing- intentional, slow, restorative breathing that activates your parasympathetic nervous system and brings your stress response down.

You’ve heard about limiting screen time and cutting caffeine after noon. But this? It’s free, it’s always available, and it works.

DM me the word TOOLKIT for my Wellness Toolkit for Women in Midlife and get access to four specific breathing exercises to bring your stress response down and much more.

Our Story

Carolyn Riley, MD, is a board-certified OB/GYN serving the residents of North Texas at CornerstoneMD in Dallas. She’s a caring and compassionate physician who takes a proactive and preventive approach to health care. Dr. Riley’s specialties include gynecology for women of all ages and weight loss for both men and women, and her services are tailored specifically to meet each patient’s needs. Her goal at the end of every patient encounter is that each person leaves feeling a little more empowered than when they arrived. After graduating with honors from the Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans with a Bachelor of Science degree, Dr. Riley went on to complete her medical education at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. She then went on to finish her residency training in OB/GYN at Tulane University in New Orleans. Dr. Riley chose OB/GYN as her life’s work because she enjoys guiding women through the progression of their reproductive years and assisting them through a smooth transition into menopause. During her years in private practice, she’s observed a growing need to address the weight-loss needs of her patients. It’s this observation that has ignited her passion to practice weight-loss medicine. Dedicated to her profession, Dr. Riley is a proud member of the Obesity Medicine Association, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the National Medical Association. When she’s not at the office helping patients meet their health goals, Dr. Riley may be found traveling, exploring new restaurants, attending sporting events or plays, listening to music, or spending time with her family and friends. She’s happily married and has a wonderful daughter and son.
