Here’s one recommendation that can change everything about how you engage with your little one! 👶

What is the recommendation…? Sitting down!
🤔 Yes, you read that right, sitting down! It seems way too simple to make a difference, but believe us, it does!

By sitting on the floor during playtime, you are bringing yourself closer to your child’s eye level, meaning your child can see you better and interact with you on a more level field. This adjustment encourages the exploration of new skills, creates more opportunities for joint attention, and builds stronger relational connections.

Exploration of new skills: In the video, we see the child reaching out to their mom, and since mom is sitting on the floor with them, she is in a position to provide physical support and emotional encouragement as the child practices standing up!

Opportunities for joint attention: While sitting on the floor, this parent can easily reach for the block that has captured her child’s attention, which helps establish and practice joint attention (the shared focus between a child and an adult on a third object).

Stronger relational connections: This parent and child are face-to-face, smiling and giggling at each other, sharing the most heartwarming emotional exchange. These moments of emotional connection strengthen the caregiver-child relationship and support early relational health!

💌 The HITC Sticking Together Campaign wants to recognize parents who engage in activities that promote Early Relational Health and support healthy child development. This month, we are highlighting Playful Parents and Caregivers who know that the smallest changes can make the biggest difference during play!

Humans need healthy relationships to support healthy development! So much of our personal growth and emotional learning happens within the context of relationships, especially in our earliest years 👶

Relationships play a significant role in shaping a child’s development, and by incorporating the 5 Pillars of Early Relational Health into our practice, we are building stronger, healthier relational ecosystems that enable children and their families to thrive🧑‍🍼

Well, kids like to do things that they enjoy! Infants and toddlers are in an exploratory phase, and these activities create different sensory stimuli that are fun to discover. Maybe they like hearing the blocks clatter on the floor or watching the feather float down from their hand.

Could the answer really be that simple? Yes! But also, no!

💡Yes, it’s fun for them, but there’s another developmental layer to it—infants and toddlers are also experimenting with cause-and-effect learning.

Play is a great way for children to learn “if/then” rationalization, the foundation of cause and effect. When they are knocking over towers, the rationalization is, “if I push this block, then I get to hear a sound I really like!” They are building a sense of self and control while exploring the connection between their actions and emotions, which is a huge development for babies! 👶🧠

This rationalization also extends to relationships and the actions of others around them. Every time you comfort your baby when they are upset, they learn something about your relationship with them. Over time, the rationalization becomes, “if I cry when I am upset, then my parent will hold me, and I will feel better.” Babies come to the powerful realization that you share a safe and secure caregiver-child relationship with them. They are not alone. And they can find comfort in your presence 💞

⏰ Read it all in about 5 seconds? That’s 5 MILLION new neural connections in your baby’s brain. This is why the first 3 years of life are so foundational for your little one’s development!

Now, all those news connections in your baby’s brain take A LOT of energy to maintain, so the brain needs to decide which ones to keep and which ones to remove. The more often neural connections are used, the more they grow and the stronger they become! The neural connections that don’t get used will weaken until, eventually, the connection is removed because the brain doesn’t want to expend unnecessary energy maintaining it ⚡️🧠

The everyday routines and daily interactions you share with your baby have the power to literally shape their brain! Focusing on simple, everyday interactions and building a secure relationship with your baby helps strengthen the neural connections that keep their brain happy and healthy 🧡

🦘Happy Kangaroo Care Awareness Day! Did you know that Kangaroo Care, also known as skin-to-skin, was first implemented in Colombia in 1983? Drs. Rey and Martinez began the practice for premature infants in response to underequipped facilities and a lack of appropriate incubation care in their hospital.

Their revolutionary approach provided both a solution to their patient’s immediate needs and sparked a breakthrough in neonatal care for premature babies.

In the 43 years since Kangaroo Care was first put into practice, the physical, emotional, and relational benefits of skin-to-skin have been well documented not just for premature babies in the NICU, but for ALL babies, in ALL settings. Those first moments of skin-to-skin connection help lay the foundation for healthy development, early relational health, and infant mental health for babies worldwide! 🌎👶

Supporting mental health doesn’t have to look so serious! Especially when we are talking about INFANT mental health 👶🧠

The 3 Pillars of Infant Mental Health are…
1. Regulating and Expressing Emotions
2. Exploring and Learning from the World Around Them
3. Building Strong, Secure Relationships

And play provides us with multiple avenues to support all three pillars of infant mental health in a fun, developmentally appropriate way! All the games you play together, every silly face you make at each other— these simple, shared moments are literally shaping the connections in your little one’s brain and laying the foundations for their mental health and wellbeing 🧡
