Today, on National Sons Day, we honor sons across the country who are turning love into action in the fight to end Alzheimer’s. One of those sons is Mike Hickman, whose journey began when his father was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2009.

Caregiving from afar, Mike did what he could — visiting every few months, calling regularly and eventually rallying his siblings to help support their mother who was his father’s primary caregiver. His father died in 2010, but the impact of that experience stayed with Mike.

After losing his father to the disease, Mike took action and became an AIM advocate, joining a passionate community working to improve dementia care and advance research. He’s since attended state advocacy days and traveled to Washington, D.C. for the AIM Advocacy Forum.

Mike now shares what he’s learned with others, becoming a trusted resource among friends and family. “I always say, ‘I’m not an expert, but here’s what I’ve seen.’”

His advocacy has even led him to take steps for his own health, choosing to get tested to better understand his own memory challenges. “I wanted to lead by example,” Mike said. “If I do have it, I can get treated and — who knows — maybe live long enough to beat it.”

We thank Mike and all sons who are fighting to with courage, compassion and determination. Your voices matter and your stories inspire. Thank you! 💜

More than one-third of dementia caregivers are daughters. 💜 It is their love and strength that carries them through their caregiving experience. That same love and strength can also drive their determination in the fight to , as it does for Lisa Kusmin.

Lisa carries on her mother and father’s legacies of raising funds and awareness to honor their commitment to the cause and to say “thank you” to the Alzheimer’s Association for being a source of strength for her parents during her mother’s journey with the disease.

Lisa’s story began when her grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. At that time, her parents became deeply involved with their local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, volunteering and fundraising to support others facing the same challenges.

Years later, Lisa’s mother was diagnosed and eventually died with the disease. Then, in 2023, she lost her father — her mother’s devoted caregiver. Lisa and her family have remained devoted to the cause, sharing that “continuing the fight feels like the most meaningful way to honor them.”

Their Walk to End Alzheimer’s team, The “A” Team, is named in honor of her mother Arlene and her grandfather Aaron. “Fundraising as The ‘A’ Team has become part of our family’s identity.” Over the years, they have raised nearly $200,000 to help fund Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

In 2023, Lisa and her siblings were invited to cut the ribbon at the start of their local Walk. Lisa has always loved bald eagles, and just as they cut the ribbon two soared overhead. “I’m not usually one to look for ‘signs,’ but that moment felt like more than just coincidence.”

Help us thank Lisa and all the daughters who show up with courage, compassion and commitment. Join Lisa in making a difference by registering for Walk to End Alzheimer’s by visiting alz.org/walk.

Dr. Alfonso Martín-Peña’s journey into dementia research was driven by awe. “I’ve always been captivated by the mind,” he says. That fascination led him to a career dedicated to understanding the brain’s mysteries. But it’s the human cost of dementia that fuels his resolve.

“In the late hours of the day, when fatigue presses in, I think of the families facing dementia and wonder when they’ll get a break…I try not to end my day until I’ve accomplished at least one small step forward — however modest — that I know will help the field move ahead.”

Thanks to funding from the Alzheimer’s Association, Dr. Martín-Peña was able to open his own lab — an achievement that has already led to promising discoveries. Being , he says, is more than support, it’s a responsibility and a commitment.

“None of this would have been possible without the support from the Alzheimer’s Association,” he says. Dr. Martín-Peña’s work is a powerful reminder that behind every breakthrough is a researcher, driven not just by science, but by compassion.
