New shifts available to work with Lex (Mondays, Thursdays & Fridays)-8:00am-5:30pm. Please consider working with him and his wonderful family in Cambridge!

"Hi! I’m Lex.
I am a ball of joy and smile and laugh all day long. My family and I are looking for skilled nurses to take care of me in my home (LPN/RN – “rank” doesn’t matter so much - experience with patients like me is what’s important). I have a very rare muscle wasting disease (SMARD) that has paralyzed my diaphragm. We didn’t know I had it until I stopped breathing suddenly one day when I was 14 months old and had 4 heart attacks and a stroke. I have a brain injury and I have trach and need to always be connected to my vent to breathe. I have emergency oxygen, but I’m usually ok on room air. I have a suprapubic catheter, a G-tube, and I need trach, nose, and mouth suction, use a cough assist, and get regular nebulizer treatments. I can’t talk or sit up or move much, and I can’t have anything by mouth. During the day, I need someone who has ICU-step down experience (or equivalent) and can train with my parents to eventually stay alone with me while they are at work and can use my single-person Hoyer/lift (my parents will train you on everything for as many shifts as we need).
I’m 7 ½ years old now. Doctors in London (UK) where I was diagnosed, told my parents I wouldn’t live past 2 (WRONG!!!). I look very stable because everyone works so hard to keep me healthy, but sometimes I need to be bagged via trach quickly by someone who has the advanced skills to realize this (I can’t tell you, you have to learn to know – my parents will teach you and would never leave you on your own unless we’re all sure), and I need someone who can calmly handle things like this during the day (especially during bug season).

I also have a bad immune system, so I need nurses who are up-to-date vaccinated (this isn’t negotiable – please don’t ask - this is my life at risk – please have the common sense to be vaccinated in this level of health care for this sort of patient) and would never come to work sick. I’m in really good shape because we’re all smart and work as a team proactively.

In my house, we have lots of snacks and wifi and Netflix for nurses and I have a loyal cat, Dikkat, who sleeps by my side most of the day (and will ignore you). We also have a robot vacuum so there is no pet hair. It’s a VERY (very) clean house!! We live in Central Cambridge and have a guest parking pass you can use at first, but we’ll quickly get you a long-term home care parking pass, so parking isn’t a big deal at all. We can compensate for travel time if you’re coming from out of Boston (We know driving here is not fun!).

I need someone who will actively engage with me and keep me busy and happy. My nurses usually become part of the family and I love them so much. Ideally, I need a day nurse from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on Mondays-Fridays. We can be flexible around the start and end times. I’m also looking for back up night nurses flexibly around 8:30 pm to 6 am in case one of my regular night nurses has to cancel. The requirements here are very different – only vaccination is required.

This is a rewarding job. I really need nurses to survive and live my best life, and so does my family. You will truly be helping a wonderful child who will stay in your heart forever and ever.

Any cuts to Medicaid would have serious consequences.

People with disabilities in Massachusetts and across the nation rely on Medicaid for essential care and services. Reducing funding would jeopardize their health and well-being, leaving many without the support they need to live independently and with dignity.

Tell your members of Congress: no cuts to Medicaid.

Please help by taking action now: https://action.thearc.org/MPAZgOs

Friday shifts (overnights 8:30pm-6am) have opened up for Lex. Please consider working with him and his wonderful family in Cambridge! Also, always looking for backup coverage. See below to learn more about Lex and the nursing care he needs.

Patient Details:
• Seven-year-old male
• SMARD1 (Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress)
• Nurse must be experienced with tracheostomy, ventilator, oxygen
• Suprapubic catheter
• G-tube
• Trach, nasal, oral suctioning
• Cough assist
• Nebulizers
• Solid assessment experience required
• Patient has a compromised immune system.
Meet Lex! As those who know him will tell you, Lex is a ball of joy who loves to smile and laugh all day long. His family is looking for skilled nurses to take care of him in his Cambridge home (LPN/RN – experience with patients like him is what matters most). Lex has a very rare muscle-wasting disease that has paralyzed his diaphragm, so he needs to be on ventilatory support 24/7. When needed, he requires trach, nose, and mouth suctioning. He receives additional breathing support with a cough assist machine and gets regular nebulizer treatments to keep him in tip-top respiratory health. He has a suprapubic catheter and is feed via gastric feeding (G tube). During the day, Lex needs someone who has solid assessment experience and will feel comfortable enough to stay alone with him while his parents are at work. Lex looks very stable because everyone works so hard to keep him healthy, but sometimes he needs to be assessed and treated quickly; ideally, it would be a clinician who can calmly handle things like this during the day (especially during bug season). Lex has a compromised immune system, so he needs nurses who would never come to work sick as well as keeping up to date on both flu and Covid vaccinations. Lex is in really good shape because his family and caregivers all work hard and proactively as a team to keep him in his best health. Lex has a loyal cat-Dikkat-who sleeps by his side most of the day. Lex and his family live in East Cambridge but have a guest parking pass and can also put your license on a long-term home care parking pass, so parking isn’t a big deal. During the day, Lex regularly naps from about 8 am to 11 am and then has a nap/chill time from 3:30 pm to 5 pm – but from 11 to 3, he needs someone who will actively engage with him and keeping him busy and happy.
For more information on our agency, please see below. If interested in working with Lex, please contact Don Palladino-RN, Senior Clinical Manager: dpalladino@ne-arc.org, 978-646-5212.

Haverhill: New hours just opened up for Kady:

Kaydence (Kady) is a 16 year-old young lady who is nonverbal but can communicate through an iPad with communication software on it. She understands everything you say, she just can’t always communicate back, although she is getting better with her device every day! She is non ambulatory. She uses a G tube for all nutrition and hydration. She has a ceiling hoyer lift to assist with transfers to her floor mat, bed or wheelchair. She loves to roll around the floor mat playing with toys or relaxing and playing her electronic piano. She has severe kyphosis and scoliosis so she needs lots of musculoskeletal support and respiratory treatments to keep her lungs healthy. She uses a chest PT machine, cough assist and nebulizers. Kady recently went to Disney and had so much fun there! Kady is looking for a nurse to join her team on Thursdays and Fridays from 6a-4p. The nurse would accompany her to school from 10a-2p with transportation and the rest of the shift would be at home. If you think you may be a good fit for Kady, please reach out to our Recruiting and Onboarding Specialist-Courtney Larocque: CLarocque@ne-arc.org Tel: (978)-646-5208 http://www.neclinical.org/
