We must recognize that the crisis facing EMS is an opportunity for a cultural revolution—a chance to create a visionary system truly commensurate with American ideals: https://ow.ly/4jYW50XNeRs

This is a battle for proper recognition and support: for providers to be valued as the vital healthcare professionals they are, and for communities to fund these integral services that are fundamental to their wellbeing and people who rely on them when they are suffering from an emergency.

The founding principle of the United States was the belief that people, united by a shared vision, can overturn an unjust system and build a better one. America was powered by the involvement of communities large and small.

Similarly, if EMS wants to be successful in creating a sustainable future, it is critical they do it hand-in-hand with the stakeholders in the communities they serve. Whatever the future of Mobile Medicine/EMS looks like, the communities we serve have to find value in it.

I'm updating a presentation that I'll be doing in NC on 11/13 with Tara Tucker. Had some thoughts in my mind to add to the discussion. I had AI create Mission, vision, and values for EMS organizations based on CoMMP Principles. I'd thought I'd share with you all for conversation.

Based on the values articulated by the Congress of Mobile Medical Professionals (CoMMP), here are three distinct samples of Mission, Vision, and Values statements for different types of EMS agencies.

Each sample emphasizes the core CoMMP themes of Uniting the healthcare ecosystem, Advancing the profession, and Advocating for patients and providers.

Sample 1: Municipal / "Third-Service" EMS Agency
This sample focuses on public health integration, community paramedicine, and collaboration with other city services.

Mission: To provide exceptional and compassionate mobile medicine to our community, 24/7. We unite with our public safety and healthcare partners to deliver integrated, patient-centered care, from emergency response to community paramedicine, advocating for the health and well-being of every person we serve.

Vision: To be a national leader in mobile medicine, transforming community health by bridging the gaps between emergency response, public health, and allied social services. We envision a future where our service is a cornerstone of a sustainable and holistic healthcare ecosystem.

Values:

Collaboration: We are one part of a larger ecosystem. We actively partner with fire, police, hospitals, and community allies to create a seamless system of care.

Innovation: We constantly evolve. We embrace education, technology, and new models of care (like community paramedicine) to advance our profession.

Compassion: We care for people. We treat every patient and family member with dignity, empathy, and respect.

Advocacy: We are the voice for our patients and our providers. We champion public health, mental well-being, and the professional development of our team.

Integrity: We are accountable to the public trust, managing our resources responsibly and performing our duties with unwavering professionalism.

Sample 2: Private / Non-Profit Transport Agency (NET, CCT)
This sample focuses on being a reliable partner in the healthcare system, provider development, and financial sustainability.

Mission: To be the premier partner for the mobile medical needs of our healthcare community. We deliver reliable, advanced, and compassionate care, uniting the links in the chain of survival and recovery—from non-emergency transport to critical care—with unparalleled professionalism.

Vision: To advance the field of mobile medicine by setting the standard for clinical excellence, provider development, and sustainable innovation. We will be an organization that invests in its people, fostering a diverse and professional workforce recognized as leaders in the industry.

Values:

Unity: We succeed by bridging the islands of care, working as a unified team with hospitals, clinics, and skilled nursing facilities to ensure seamless patient transitions.

Excellence: We are committed to continuous learning, professional development, and the highest standards of critical care.

Provider Focus: We advocate for our team's holistic well-being, fair compensation, and career advancement, knowing they are our greatest asset.

Adaptability: We evolve our services to meet the complex challenges of modern healthcare, ensuring financial sustainability and long-term service.

Service: We deliver on our promise of compassionate, reliable, and expert care for every patient, every time.

Sample 3: Fire-Based EMS Division
This sample focuses on the integration of fire and EMS as a unified "all-hazards" response model.

Mission: To protect and serve our community through a unified "all-hazards" approach. We provide rapid, professional, and compassionate medical care as an integrated part of our fire service mission, working collaboratively to safeguard the health and safety of our citizens.

Vision: To be a progressive model for the American fire service, fully advancing the mobile medical profession as a core component of community risk reduction. We will champion the holistic well-being of our members and collaborate with all allied services to build a safer, healthier, and more resilient community.

Values:

Integration: We believe fire and EMS are two pillars of one mission, united in purpose, training, and response.

Compassion: We provide empathetic care to all, recognizing the human element in every emergency and treating every patient as a member of our community.

Advancement: We are dedicated to the constant evolution of our medical skills, leadership, and professional standards, advocating for our members' education and growth.

Community: We are public servants, actively engaged with our citizens, advocating for public health initiatives, and building trust.

Well-being: We are a family. We support the mental, physical, and emotional health of our providers, ensuring they are prepared and resilient for the challenges of the job.

What is your influence on your organization's culture? 💡

Quit blaming it all on the bosses! (We’ll discuss their role next month 😉).

Culture isn't created by osmosis; it's an active process driven by the people. The introspective question we must ask ourselves is: What influence are you actively having?

"Sometimes the light is all shining on me, sometimes I can barely see." Too often, our ego blinds us to the positive, making us miss the true effect we have on the team.

This article dives into how we—the frontline and everyone in between—influence our EMS and Emergency Services culture.

Find out where your light is truly shining. Read it now:

Emergency service organizations face challenges in maintaining a positive culture, often blaming leadership for toxicity. Individuals must assess their own influence on culture, emphasizing Emotional Intelligence as crucial for improvement.

Join us for this thought-provoking conversation. Is there a disconnect from EMS Education to the streets?

EMS Survey Says: EMS providers feel their education doesn't prepare them for the streets. This presentation provides evidence of a disconnect from what we teach in the classroom versus the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to deal with patients in the streets.

DEAR COLLEAGUES 🚑 🚒 🚓 🚁 🏥 --

I'm getting a number of questions regarding our view on the implications of the President's latest Executive Orders with respect to the Safe Streets & Roads for All (SS4A) program and other federal funding opportunities. To assist with the conversation, I have compiled some thoughts into the attached letter for your review. Please be advised that nothing in this letter should be construed as a political statement of any kind.

We can surely all agree that the business of government (at every level) is complicated; and as a longtime member of the media, I feel personally that there is in general too much noise happening everywhere now. It has become increasingly difficult for anyone—even those on the “inside”—to know what is real versus what is hype mixed with politics.

Over the past few months, I have received a few (much appreciated!) comments that people follow my social media posts for a sense of what's “real” across the Mobile Medical ecosystem (i.e., Fire, Ambulance, Critical Care, CP/MIH, and interoperability), especially to the extent that I try to tamp down the noise and focus on what we all need to know.

This week, of course, the topic of concern is President Trump's Executive Order (EO) regarding federal financial programs, including grants and loans, presumably including the USDOT’s Safe Streets & Roads for All (SS4A) program. I certainly do not have a crystal ball so please be advised that what you will read below is my opinion based on information that I have received through numerous discussions with informed experts. However, it should not be taken as fact (no one outside the Executive Office of the President knows exactly what will happen until it does). The attached letter is why I see meaningful cause for optimism.

No one on the outside knows exactly what to expect. However, the Beyond Lucid Technologies team is proceeding apace, confident that excellent programs like SS4A will continue, even if they look a little different under a new administration…but we anticipated that all along. Please reach out with any questions, thoughts or concerns; and do forward this letter to anyone it could help.
