Focus Point Mental Health, LLC

Focus Point Mental Health, LLC Focus Point Mental Health provides compassionate, community-based services across Virginia. We empower individuals to heal, grow, and live independently.

Medicaid accepted. Nonprofit support available for those without coverage. Healing starts here. Focus Point Mental Health is a Virginia-based, Black woman-owned mental health agency committed to empowering individuals and families to lead self-directed, stable, and fulfilling lives. Founded in 2017 by Angela Williams, a licensed mental health provider with over 20 years of experience, the business

was born from a deep understanding of systemic gaps in access to care—and a fierce desire to be part of the solution. Our agency provides community-based behavioral health services that are Medicaid-billable and person-centered, including Mental Health Skill-Building, Intensive In-Home Services, Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Outpatient Therapy, and our Sponsored Residential Program. We support both children and adults across Richmond, Danville/Martinsville, and Lynchburg. But we don’t stop at billing Medicaid—we go further. After witnessing countless individuals being denied care because they made “too much” to qualify for Medicaid or too little to afford private insurance, Angela founded a nonprofit arm of the business to ensure no one falls through the cracks. Our nonprofit helps fund therapy and support services for clients who don’t meet the criteria for insurance coverage, ensuring that cost is never a barrier to care. What makes us different is our heart. We don’t just provide mental health services—we build relationships. Our staff is deeply connected to the communities we serve. Many of us have lived experiences that mirror those of our clients. This shared understanding fosters trust, which is often the first step toward healing. We’ve hosted mental health awareness events, including our annual Mental Health Fashion Show, designed to break stigma, spark conversation, and celebrate the resilience of those living with mental health conditions. We are rooted in the belief that healing isn’t only clinical—it’s cultural, communal, and personal. Despite the challenges of recruiting and retaining qualified mental health professionals—a common issue in our field—we remain committed to growing a passionate team. We’re working to offer ongoing training, mentorship, and leadership pathways for staff to grow within the organization. By pouring into our people, we strengthen the very foundation of our care. Our vision is bold: to become a statewide leader in accessible, equity-driven mental health care. We aim to open new locations, deepen partnerships with schools and hospitals, and expand our nonprofit capacity so more individuals can receive therapy, regardless of their financial or insurance status. At Focus Point, our motto is simple: If you’re not a part of the solution, you may be a part of the problem. We’ve chosen to be the solution—one life, one breakthrough, one healing moment at a time.

I have always felt like "Napoleon Dynamite," on the "inside," and I think I always will. I have never "quite" fit in anywhere that I can remember LOL:).

Napoleon moves through life on his own wavelength. He's not "smooth," and he doesn’t try to be. When I am not with clients, I am often "kind of in my head" and socially awkward vs. outwardly engaged with others e.g., a little distracted, and always daydreaming;).

When I am out in public or at social events, I often feel unseen, which I like sometimes (because I am naturally very, very shy) and being a chameleon helps in my profession. I am 100% ok with this, and accept it about my Self.

But, like Napoleon Dynamite, I can also feel "nuanced" or "layered" inside, "uncertain" yet "knowing" internally, at the same time. Like Napoleon, I can be unapologetically myself, loyal to the people I care about (his support for Pedro 🥹), creative and original (I love to laugh often and cry less, haha) and quietly resilient.

I wanted to share these nuggets with you to set the stage in anticipation of this Thursday night's "Double Interview" with my Self and Angela Williams of Focus Point Mental Health, LLC Focus Point Inc. continuing our "Brave Conversations: The Many Faces of Mental Health," as Angela and I share a little of our lived experiences as healers and as humans.

So, I thought it might be time to interview the "fun" side of me for you gentle reader and see what you think.

1. Name:
Jenny Yates

2. Occupation/Educational Background:
Master's in Social Work, Specializing in Communities, Groups and Organizations. Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Founder of Four Rivers, Inc.

3. Favorite hobbies in your free time:
I love the freedom of getting outside -- roadtrips, hiking, soaking up nature. I also love spending time w my two teens, shopping, working out and binging Netflix.

4. What brings you the most joy in life?
Celebrating "life" with my teens - I cherish every trip to we take together, whether its to Dollar General or the beach. Every minute is a memory.

5. What do you like to do on a Saturday night?
I love, love, love, getting dressed up, going to a fancy restaurant (think...Roanoke or Greensboro:) and going dancing after. But most of the time I am home relaxing and catching up on paperwork (haha).

6. What helps you “get out of bed” in the morning?
I love the anticipation of a new day, meditating with my first cup of coffee and gazing upon the little white lights in my bedroom.

7. What is one thing you love about yourself?
I deeply love what I do as a therapist. I believe its a calling and something I have known about my Self for a very long time. I love that I have stayed committed to the healing work that I do everyday and consider it an honor to be invited into my client's worlds, and witness stories of courageousness. I am so content when I am "in flow" as a therapist, holding sacred space for others.

8. What is one thing you love about your community?
I was born and raised in South Carolina then moved to Martinsville, VA about 20 years ago for love and to build a career and family. I have greatly enjoyed watching Martinsville/ Henry County grow and do a little happy dance in my heart every time a new place to eat, get gas, or shop opens up.

9. What do you hope others might consider doing after reading your interview that would make you smile?
I hope whoever is reading this is inspired to go outdoors or even sit near a window and put their face in the sun, and just feel the sun on their skin, if only for a moment. That would make me smile.

Love to all,
Jenny Yates

PS ~ See you all THIS TH NIGHT with Angela as we "interview each other" about our Lived Experiences and how we navigate this "thing called Life" together:)🥰

💚 Mental Health Days Matter 💚

Taking a mental health day isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity.

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is rest, reset, and give your mind the space it needs to breathe.

A mental health day can look like:
✨ Stepping away from work or responsibilities
✨ Unplugging from noise and pressure
✨ Checking in with yourself honestly
✨ Choosing rest without guilt

You don’t have to wait until burnout to take care of yourself.

Protect your peace. Prioritize your well-being.

; World Semicolon Day ;

A semicolon represents a pause… not an end.

Today, we stand in support of those who have faced depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts, and chose to keep going.

Your story isn’t over.
Your voice matters.
Your life has purpose.

Let today be a reminder to check in, speak up, and support one another. Sometimes the smallest conversations can make the biggest difference. 💚

If you’re struggling, you don’t have to go through it alone.

🌿 Tonight’s Village Circle was powerful, practical, and needed.

We had an important conversation around crisis awareness, crisis services, and community support with special guests from Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services. We talked about what a mental health crisis is, how it can look different from person to person, and why early recognition matters. We also covered warning signs like changes in sleep, appetite, mood, withdrawal, panic, and loss of interest in daily life.

Some of the biggest takeaways were these:
💚 Crisis is not always loud — sometimes it shows up quietly through behavior changes and isolation.
💚 988 is the preferred number for mental health crises, while 911 should be used for medical emergencies or immediate danger. If 911 is called for a mental health situation, it helps to clearly say that and ask for a CIT-trained officer.
💚 Local crisis support is also available through the CSB crisis line at 434-793-4922, and mobile crisis services can help reduce transportation barriers.

We also learned that support does not stop after the immediate crisis. Follow-up care, warm handoffs, crisis stabilization, outpatient counseling, and help navigating insurance or Medicaid all matter. The crisis center is open 24/7 for walk-ins at 366 Piney Forest Road, and community trainings like Mental Health First Aid and safeTALK are available to help more people recognize signs and respond well.

And let me add this clearly: Focus Point Mental Health is also an available resource for follow-up care after a crisis. Once the immediate crisis has passed, ongoing support still matters. Healing often requires continued care, connection, and community.

A huge thank you to our speakers, Dominick & Jason, for helping us understand that knowledge creates preparedness, and preparedness can save lives. Tonight reminded us that the village matters, early support matters, and nobody should have to face a crisis alone. 💚
