Lafayette County Emergency Medical Services

Lafayette County Emergency Medical Services LCEMS is a local, county owned, community oriented ambulance service providing prehospital care. And thus we enter into the field of EMS.

Every day, thousands of individuals experience what constitutes a medical emergency: an incident that will, if the individual does not seek immediate treatment, result in serious injury and/or death. Heart attacks, drownings, car accidents, falls, allergic reactions, shootings, and diabetic crises are among the various situations that fall into the emergent category. In such cases, it's pivotal th

at the patient receive medical care as soon as possible. Emergency Medical Services, more commonly known as EMS, involves all personnel directly involved with public emergencies. Fire personnel, police officers, EMTs, ER nurses/doctors, and even trained bystanders are part of this broad service. Each sector plays a large role in responding to emergencies, activating the appropriate resources, and resolving whatever the issue may be. As a whole, EMS is an action-packed field, full of uncertainties and constantly changing scenarios. Law officers gets to see the best and worst of people as they attempt to enforce policies. Fire personnel feel the heat as they rush into burning buildings to extinguish engulfing flames. EMTs treat the ill and injured, always ready to assess, treat, and heal those most in need. Together, these public safety workers help to save the lives of people throughout the world. Would you like the opportunity to become part of this elite team and make a big difference, perhaps even saving someone's life? This week, we celebrate the people who answer the call — day or night, rain or shine, on someone’s very worst day.

From trainings and certifications to long shifts and difficult calls, our EMS providers put in countless hours behind the scenes to ensure they’re ready when the community needs them most. The work is demanding, fast-paced, and often unseen… but the impact is felt every single day.

During EMS Week, we want to recognize the dedication, compassion, and professionalism of our crews, along with our incredible EMS partners throughout the region. We’re proud to train together, respond together, and serve this community side by side.

Thank you to every paramedic, EMT, dispatcher, instructor, and healthcare partner who helps make emergency care possible. Your commitment does not go unnoticed.

Happy EMS Week!!

❄️ EXTREME COLD WATCH ❄️
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Watch from late Thursday night through early Saturday as a strong arctic air mass moves in. Conditions are expected to be significantly colder than normal, with dangerously low wind chill values that can pose serious risks to people, pets, and equipment if proper precautions are not taken.

❄️ WHAT IS HAPPENING? ❄️
• A blast of arctic cold will push into the area Thursday night and linger into Saturday, bringing wind chills as low as 40° below zero in some places, especially Friday morning.
• Surface air temperatures are forecast to fall into the single digits above or below zero while winds continue to push chills well below freezing.☠️
• An Extreme Cold Watch means dangerously cold air is possible — conditions may be upgraded to a more serious warning as details solidify closer to the event.

❄️ WHAT IS THE DANGER? ❄️
• With strong winds and bitter cold air, exposed skin can develop frostbite in as little as 10 minutes.
• Hypothermia risk increases the longer someone stays outside without adequate protection.

❄️ WHO WILL THIS AFFECT? ❄️
• Everyone outdoors — especially children, seniors, and people with health conditions
• Pet owners
• Vehicle owners (cold can reduce battery performance and tire pressure)
• People without consistent heating or shelter

❄️ WHAT CAN YOU DO? ❄️
✔ Stay indoors as much as possible during peak cold periods.
✔ Dress in multiple layers if you must go out — covering ears, hands, and face.
✔ Use space heaters safely and never leave them unattended
✔ Limit the time pets spend outside; bring them indoors if possible.
✔ Check on elderly neighbors or others who may be vulnerable.
✔ Keep vehicles winter-ready — check batteries, fuel, tire pressure, and antifreeze.
✔ If driving in cold conditions, carry blankets, water, and a charged phone.
