With Spring and warm weather arriving, many families participate in outdoor activities. Did you know you are legally allowed to breastfeed anywhere you are legally permitted? If you feel more comfortable, you may wear a cover, however, it is NOT required under Ohio law. Click the link to learn more.

Velamentous cord insertion happens when the umbilical cord attaches to the membranes (amnion/chorion) rather than directly into the center of the placenta. The vessels then travel unprotected through the membranes before reaching the placenta. That means no Wharton’s jelly cushioning those vessels, making them more vulnerable to rupture.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫?

Because if those vessels are lying near the cervix (vasa previa), and the membranes are artificially ruptured, especially before the baby is engaged or labor is well underway, those exposed vessels can tear. And that can cause rapid fetal blood loss. It’s rare, but when it happens, it’s an emergency.

So what can we do 🤔

𝐊𝐄𝐄𝐏 👏🏽 𝐓𝐇𝐄 👏🏽𝐒𝐀𝐂 👏🏽𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐂𝐓 👏🏽

There is power in physiological labor. Keeping the membranes intact protects the vessels, the cord, and the baby, especially in cases where velamentous insertion or vasa previa go undiagnosed prenatally.

Letting the waters break on their own supports:
🌿Cushioning for baby (and those delicate vessels)
🌿Optimal positioning through pressure regulation
🌿Hormonal pacing of labor
🌿Lower risk of cord compression or prolapse

Your waters are not a ticking time bomb.

They’re a protective shield.

Don’t rush the rupture. Trust the process.

2024 was a year of slowing down, of personal growth, and pressing pause on a few dreams to make sure I keep my priorities straight.

While I thoroughly enjoyed supporting 5 families this year I realized that the stress of birth work while having littles was not a good fit for my family; in light of this I will not be taking on birth clients for 2025 💔 This was a difficult decision but I will be shifting my focus to prenatal planning and postpartum support.

Thank you to all of my clients who made this past year special! Welcome 2025!

Sometimes I have clients that have the coolest family business! It only took me a few years to make it to but it was so much fun! From shopping and eating to creating our own bouquets , and I had a wonderful girls day (and we didn’t even get rained out!)

POV: dreaming of a home birth, confident in your ability, but choosing a traditional route because of others’ voices and fears.

Just know it’s never too late to change your provider (although it *can* be challenging! Having a doula as a resource can be so helpful in navigating late(r) term changes to your birth team and/or place.)

Let’s talk about cutting the cord!

Did you know that at any given time approximately 1/3 of Baby’s blood 🩸 is flowing through the placenta being nourished and oxygenated? When Baby is born it’s ideal to allow that 1/3 of their blood to return to their body from the placenta by practicing delayed cord clamping/cutting. ✂️

While some providers/settings have their own timeline for “delayed” cord cutting (like waiting 30 seconds or 1 minute after delivery) physiologic cord clamping/cutting is when you wait for the umbilical cord to turn limp and white, meaning all Baby’s blood has returned to their body from the placenta.

In the 1️⃣ photo you can see a dark, tightly coiled umbilical cord full of blood. In the 2️⃣ photo you can see a limp white cord - this is the kind of cord we’re looking for before the cut.

Various procedures can mean different things to different providers - always confirm definitions with your care team to make sure you’re on the same page 🤗

Cleaned out our spare car before sending it on to its final resting place only to find my visitor sticker from my very first doula baby’s birth 🥹 seems like yesterday and forever ago! I’ve attended 30 other births since then and I’m grateful for all I’ve learned along the way. After almost 8 months off call, I’m getting ready to meet my newest doula babies and I couldn’t be more excited!

Did your baby come on their due date? Let me know in the comments below! 👇
