The more, the merrier and (playfully) scarier! That’s been our approach to celebrating hALLoWeEn at Westview for years. Our compassionate staff make considerable candy donations to Westview’s Therapeutic Recreation Department in the weeks leading up to Halloween. This bounty of bite-size sweets is then distributed for dispensing by patients and residents at Westview—sweet, they are as well.

As individual patient and resident interest is gauged for Halloween happenings, our Recreation team works to set up willing participants with their own decorated “doorstop” outside of their room—just like they would during late October to greet eager Trick-or-Treaters any year. They are offered colorful costumes and a variety of means to adorn themselves and their spaces for the festivities. In the early part of the day, patients and residents enjoyed an acoustic concert of foot-tapping tunes by two members of the "Still Pickin' Trio." The entertaining performance by Patricia McDonald and Dennis Sheridan kept audience energy elated and was enhanced further by the occasional flash-mob of Westview staff joyously dancing their way through the room.

Families of staff members, relatives of patients and residents, and the general community have long been invited to bring children to Westview for our version of a “Trick-or-Treat Street” on Halloween. This year, another brigade of bouncing characters joined our parade: students and families from Westview Child Care Center! This whole happy hocus-pocus circus circled around Westview’s halls in the late afternoon; manifesting smiles on our faces and bigger smiles on our hearts. As observed in the imagery, Westview staff have no trouble getting into the spirit on All Hallows Eve. Seeing true joy like this abundantly available to children age 1 to 101 is always a special scene. To all of our staff, patients, residents, family members, visitors, and four-legged special guests that stopped by: thanks for making our neighborhood feel like home on Halloween.

Jordyn Staveski was distinguished as Westview’s Employee of the Month in August. As an Occupational Therapist at Westview’s Outpatient Aquatic Center, Jordyn renders rehabilitative support in both the inpatient setting at Westview Health Care Center as well as their dedicated outpatient treatment wing. Whether helping long-term residents and patients or individuals by appointment, Jordyn’s goals at Westview remain constant: to maximize patients’ inner sense of potential and achieve what otherwise might be considered irresolvable. She joined the team at Westview Outpatient & Aquatic Therapy in 2023 and has appreciated her own growth as a professional, in-step, with the growth of Westview’s scope and scale of services. Jordyn acknowledges the warm welcome she received upon her arrival, noting her early perception that Westview would be a great place to continue learning; building experiences on the foundation of her education.

Jordyn calls Woodstock, CT her hometown and she is a proud graduate of The Woodstock Academy. Feeling particularly motivated to study health sciences, sports medicine—and ultimately—therapeutic treatment, she enrolled in Springfield College’s well-renowned undergraduate program for this field of study. After earning this degree, she continued right along Springfield College’s educational path and promptly started working on her master’s degree there. Still—after achieving her Master of Occupational Therapy in 2023, then doing 6 months of field work, and then taking her board exams to finally attain status as and OTA/L, Jordyn hoped to find placement in a setting where all of her skills would flourish. She had a job shadowing experience at Westview during her high school years and she recalled this experience as she set forth professionally; finding an enriching space at Westview Health Care Center.

One of the aspects Jordyn highly values about her role at Westview is the diverse and vocationally enriching set of patient profiles that she treats. By applying her expertise to a wide range of patients and abilities in different inpatient and outpatient settings, she rises to take on unexpected challenges each day. Working with patients in both long-term care and short-term care manifests a constantly changing application of Jordyn’s skills. Identifying different abilities within patient profiles challenges Jordyn’s mind as an Occupational Therapist and she devotedly seeks the most personalized pathway for patients to achieve as much as they can.

“No dream is technically impossible! We can always adapt and find a different way to help patients get where they want to be—in terms of ambulation and overall quality of living,” Jordyn asserted. “We like patients to know that our therapy teams commit our best efforts to accomplish their patient goals. Whether it’s something specific, like a car transfer so they can go to restaurants and errands; or something basic but essential, like wheelchair comfort, we want patients to know we are dedicated to meeting their individual needs.”

Jordyn celebrates the team camaraderie among the staff at Westview Outpatient & Aquatic Center. She notes that they all work together very well, and that their wide range of expertise and experience in the field of therapy complement each other’s attributes. They operate in a culture of constant self-improvement among both patients and staff. Adding to her appreciation, Jordyn enjoys the fact that they’re all “dog people” in Westview Outpatient & Aquatic Center! A rotating roster of four-legged friends regularly joins the team to stimulate smile muscles.

A proud pet owner herself, Jordyn adores the company of her two cats. Reading ranks among her favorite interests; acknowledging that while she enjoys a wide range of genres, she is inclined to read current and historically-set fiction. Jordyn loves to travel to destinations domestic and international. So far, she has visited France, Germany, Italy, and Australia—and hopes to make Japan her next adventure. Another one of Jordyn’s favorite pastimes is outland hiking in the spectacular landscapes of the New England region, or even more remote places like Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada.

One of Jordyn’s favorite endeavors is attending concerts and reunion tours to celebrate the radio hits of amber adolescence. She has especially enjoyed seeing Blink-182 in recent times, and is drawn to alternative and metal concerts from time to time; especially liking the fan experience on the Xfinity Center lawn. Family is a centrally important theme in Jordyn’s life. She is close with her mother and father, Rebecca and Kenneth, and her younger sister Codi—who Jordyn is proud to have as her Maid of Honor in her wedding next year. An awareness and appreciation for family follows Jordyn in her professional pursuits, as she indicated in her remarks upon receiving Westview’s Employee of the Month designation:

“I am fortunate to work in both the inpatient and outpatient settings at Westview. I enjoy meeting and working with patients, residents, their family members, and their caregivers; forming strong interprofessional relationships throughout the process.” Jordyn emphasized her gratitude, adding “I’d like to thank my family, my friends, my colleagues in the Therapy Department, and all others who have inspired me to be my best self—personally and professionally.”

David T. Panteleakos, Administrator of Westview Health Care Center, lauds Jordyn’s multidisciplinary grasp of Occupational Therapy for patients across all levels of need. “Jordyn exhibits her strength of knowledge and command of treatment pathways in each case that she manages. Her flexibility across many different settings and scenarios is as commendable as it is congenial. Jordyn’s friendly presence is well-known to patients, residents, families, and colleagues throughout the facility. Congratulations to Jordyn!”

POMFRET SCHOOL STUDENTS CHANNEL GRATITUDE AT WESTVIEW

A group of students from Pomfret School visited Westview Health Care Center this week to offer a spontaneous, sincere visit to patients and residents. Westview Therapeutic Recreation Director Louise Taylor was contacted by Pomfret School educators Bobby and Erin Fisher about such an experience to supplement a course they are currently teaching. Mr. Fisher is Pomfret School’s Director of Spiritual Life, and Mrs. Fisher is Pomfret School’s Director of Wellbeing, and they have set out to teach students about the merits of actionable altruism. Revolving around themes of kindness, acknowledgement, and service, they are leading this particular class through real-world applications of grace and giving in addition to their classroom dialogue.

Mr. and Mrs. Fisher of Pomfret School reached out with a request to sit and talk with Westview patients and residents during lunch time. For many at Westview, the mid-day meal is served in the company of others in the Formal Dining Room where there is always room for a few more friends to pull up a chair. Westview Therapeutic Recreation Director Louise Taylor welcomed our kindred visitors and offered guidance as they found their places among the tables. She pointed out that any sense of fellowship in this setting is valued; encouraging their conversations with helpful suggestions to promote social scenes all across the room.

This good deed by Pomfret School is widely appreciated by Westview patients, residents, and staff members in turn. Westview is not only thankful for their time commitment, but truly obliged for the genuine sense of presence they brought to our patients and residents at lunch this week. Westview would like to send extra special thanks to Bobby and Erin Fisher for coordinating such a grateful gathering, and for echoing the message of benevolence in our hearts. Speaking on this visit to Westview, Mr. Fisher outlined the reliably familiar rewards found by blossoming new human connections:

“Intergenerational visiting like this—having a moment together to sit alongside somebody who may be older, may be a complete stranger— gives our students the opportunity to be curious as listeners. It helps them to tap into our human capacity to offer kindness, compassion, and to ultimately develop friendships. Surely an experience like this at Westview provides our students an opportunity to deliver some kindness, but I think as we return to school, we’ll find that a they have been the benefactors of it as well.”

Westview Health Care Center Administrator David T. Panteleakos noted his appreciation for this dually-uplifting visit. “I am so impressed with Pomfret School for having curriculum that focuses on kindness, giving, and community as areas of study. Those concepts are certainly important to our efforts here at Westview, and we are always happy to share our space with all generations to cultivate sustained compassion in our community.”

Calleigh O’Brien was praised as Westview’s Employee of the Month in July. Calleigh connects with students of Westview Child Care Center as a Teacher Assistant in the 2-year-olds classroom. The “Turtle Room” is designated for this age group, and this is where Calleigh and her colleagues develop daily plans that gently introduce new ideas into an otherwise comfortably-predictable environment for toddlers. As minds are expanding for little learners, Calleigh knows the importance of creating educational incentive for the children through excitement, encouragement, and entertainment.

Since her own early childhood, Calleigh has felt a mutually-magnetic connection to pediatric care. “I feel like I’ve been babysitting since I was 6 years old! I’ve always been very kid-oriented,” she expressed. “Children just seem to gravitate towards me in public!” It is no surprise that she thusly began working at Westview Child Care Center during her senior year of high school. Calleigh began working in the infant room; taking responsibility for four of these littlest students at the Dayville, CT child care facility. When she realigned to work with the 2-year-old group, Calleigh found this demographic of students to be an ideal fit for her as an educator. She delights in their developing sense of humor, how outgoing they can be, and hearing new words enter their vocabulary. Of course, she adores seeing all of the interactions between the teachers and students—but there is a certain joy that Calleigh experiences while witnessing her students’ interactions among each other.

Considering that Pre-K is the school before school, Calleigh and her teaching colleagues like to generate a yearning for learning to promote students’ progress. They utilize a lot of hands-on lesson approaches to activate excitement within the young pupils. Calleigh prepares the schedules for the Turtle Room, and collaborates with her teammate Illenys on art projects. Finding bright, visual ways to make all of the lessons impactful, the teachers involve flash cards, finger puppets, and stuffed animals to stoke curiosity. Throughout most of the day, Calleigh and the Teachers keep the lights off and utilize only natural sunlight—even closing the blinds and reading with flashlights to pretend it’s nighttime to, again, make the moment more fun.

A 2025 graduate of Killingly High School, Calleigh sees herself going into a Pediatric medical field. She is strongly considering the pursuit of a Nursing Degree; citing the knowledge she has already gleaned through understanding students’ medication certifications at Westview Child Care Center as an entry point. Clearly, there is a high level of parent interaction in child care, child education, and pediatric medicine, and Calleigh already feels confident in that regard. A personal passion for Calleigh is Competitive Dance: she challenged herself and other competitive dancers for over 13+ years travelling to competitions from New England to the Florida coast. As a fun anecdote, Calleigh actually had a few current and already-graduated students of Westview Child Care Center as her dance pupils before the facility opened. “I taught them dancing when they had just learned to walk, so I loved seeing them graduate preschool! It makes me so proud to see all these stages of their growth,” Calleigh chimed.

A resident of Brooklyn, CT, Calliegh is close with her family. Her mother Corissa, father Aaron, and sister Aby enjoy their time together as a unit. Calleigh holds cherished bonds with her grandfather Chris and grandmother Sue—a fellow teacher, and no doubt, an inspiration to Calleigh’s efforts as an educator. While away from Westview Child Care Center, Calleigh continuously seeks opportunities to render care as a babysitter, nanny, or even as a dogsitter; having First Aid and CPR Certification for dogs of all sizes. As a volunteer Sunday School Teacher, Calleigh is quite involved in her Church and helps to coordinate Vacation Bible School there. She maintains gratitude for all of the support received from her kith and kin, with Calleigh especially highlighting her good friend Lauren as a treasured connection and key contributor towards her successes. Receiving this award presented Calleigh with a moment to reflect on her accomplishments since joining the team at Westview Child Care Center:

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunities that Westview has provided me, along with all of the memorable relationships that I’ve made along the way,” Calleigh commented. “I am incredibly surprised that I have been chosen as employee of the month! I am so proud of how far I have come as a Westview employee, and hope to continue growing!”

Katy Holzer, Director of Westview Child Care Center, identified Calleigh’s multiple contributions to Westview Child Care Center: "Ms. Calleigh has been an integral part of our team since our grand opening and continues to shine every day. Over the past year, she has shown tremendous growth, truly finding her home in the Turtle (2-year-olds) classroom—while still being the first to jump in and lend a hand wherever she’s needed. Her willingness to step up and support her peers embodies what makes our Westview team so special. We are so grateful for Calleigh’s energy, flexibility, and dedication to our children and classrooms!"

James Allentuck, AGNP-C just joined the team at Westview and we are excited to align his pursuits with our stated mission of “Caring for Generations.” James is now a part of Westview’s General Nurse Practitioner Program; treating both inpatient and outpatient medical needs from Westview’s Dayville, CT campus. James’ certification as an Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner provides him with ideal preparation to reach a broad range of patients here in our community—and Westview is proud to help make those connections.

James hails from Boston, MA through his education and experience. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing and subsequent Master of Science in Nursing from Boston College’s William F. Connell School of Nursing; finishing at the top of his class at both levels. Throughout his academic years James sought experiential exposure in addition to educational expertise. Working in the context of assisted living, outpatient care, hospitals, and home care agencies provides him with a wealth of first-hand treatment knowledge. Not only is he familiar with patients of all ages, but his education and training exhibit his curiosity for the study of aging and life-long wellness.

Through professional encounters with Westview Medical Director and Board-Certified Geriatrician Dr. Joseph J. Botta, James first learned about Westview Health Care Center. With Kerri Sauer, APRN-DNP already in place as an inpatient and outpatient Nurse Practitioner at Westview leading the pursuit improving patient outcomes, discussions developed about expanding patient access by expanding our team. Westview is greatly encouraged to continue lighting the way towards wellness with the growth of our Nurse Practitioner Services. Join us in welcoming James Allentuck, AGNP-C at Westview!

The Country Living Choir merrily rolled across the street from Westview Commons for one of their friendly Sing-A-Long sessions with patients and residents of Westview Health Care Center. Arriving via the courteous comfort of the Westview Commons van, the Country Living Choir sets out with confident command of their choral abilities thanks to the leadership of Assistant Activities Coordinator Nancy Blake.

Lyric sheets are distributed, voices are harmonized, and spirits are lifted every time the Country Living Choir share their gift of music around the Westview campus. Their set list of classic tunes from the American songbook catches the ear of everyone in the vicinity and often captures bystanders to join into the vocalizations. Their next Sing-A-Long sensation rings out when they host an audience on their home stage at Westview Commons’ Picturedrome Theater—stay TUNED!

To the Westview Wayfinders, our Limitless Lighthouses:

Life is a voyage, and it helps to know where to find safe harbor. At Westview, this port is not a place, it is people. It is family—a dedicated team that shines a guiding light for every patient, resident, and student who comes aboard.

This week, we gaze out at the horizon and see your radiance, clear and true. You stand on the precipice of care, shining a beacon that cuts through the mists of uncertainty and guides every patient, resident, and student to a place of safe anchorage. Your responsibilities at Westview Health Care Center, Country Living at Westview Commons, and Westview Child Care Center are great. Your impact is immeasurable.

In every act of kindness, every moment of expertise, every tender turn of care, you are a torchbearer. In your collective efforts, you are a constellation of stars, illuminating the path forward. Lighting the way with a Recreational Therapy activity at Westview! Patients and residents took part in an “Illuminated Mandala” craft project and were beaming with pride for their creations. By using popsicle sticks, clothespins, and hot glue, frames were set up for each artist’s illuminated tile to be affixed.

The mandala sheets that were printed out and provided were on simple white paper. Then, after using a layer of wax crayon for color, a layer of baby oil is applied as the “glowing medium” to bring the light forth. Small battery-operated luminary lights placed behind each mandala offer a warm, personal beacon for each artist to call their own. As they set out to dry in the daylight by the window, this palette of miniature panels beamed forth like mighty stained glass masterpieces.

Ty Nilo earned acknowledgement as Westview Health Care Center’s Employee of the Month in June. Ty provides operational support to multiple teams at Westview as an Administrative Assistant; aiding the healthcare, maintenance, and business systems throughout the Dayville, CT skilled nursing facility. At times in this role, Ty specializes his duties to help complete the goals of specific departments and has excelled in adapting, asserting, and assisting in a great variety of Westview’s efforts. Through these endeavors, he has become well known among the staff at Westview Health Care Center, Country Living at Westview Commons, and Westview Child Care Center.

While living in Union, CT for most of his life Ty maintains connections with friends across the state. He is a graduate of The Woodstock Academy, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Nichols College. Ty’s father Terry is a carpenter and his mother Phuong is a Doctor of Physical Therapy—specifically the Director of Westview Outpatient and Aquatic Therapy. As a result, Ty has been mutually familiar with Westview facilities and staff for many years, and his present-day professional performance is a strong compliment to his narrative. This recognition signifies facility-wide praise for Ty’s myriad contributions since joining the staff in October 2023. Among his outside interests, Ty has a keen sense of style and steady intentions for his fitness. Ty asserts that spontaneously planned adventures he has with friends are celebrated the same as their long-scheduled trips and traditions. Concertgoing is another passionate pursuit for Ty. While is proud to have seen Blink 182 four times (he insists that he truly enjoys a diverse array of music!) he appreciates everything from pop hits to punk rock to film scores.

During his professional tenure at Westview, Ty has held many different responsibilities as a direct assistant to the Support Services Director, the Staff Education Director, and the Infection Prevention & Control Director. In addition to those roles Ty has also served salutations and smiles at the reception desk for visiting guests of Westview. Throughout all the reconfiguration of duties and relocations around Westview facilities, Ty comports as calm, cool, and collected. He welcomes the challenge of multidisciplinary understanding, and finds it to be a good application for his education in business management:

“Working at Westview has presented me with a lot of different departmental perspectives, and I like to understand the organization’s structure through all of these contributing parts. There are so many different realms of operation at all of the Westview facilities—I really appreciate being able to experience as much of it as possible.” Ty further detailed his gratitude for all of his interactions at Westview contributing to his success: “I am blessed to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing and supportive team here at Westview. I thank my co-workers, friends, and all the wonderful community members who visit their loved ones here at Westview. You have all helped create a supportive and empathetic atmosphere that has really helped me continue to grow as a person. I truly am so grateful to you all, and I hope to continue making you all proud.”

Westview Administrator David T. Panteleakos appreciates all the adaptability, intuition, and interest Ty shows in his efforts. “Ty combines an innate understanding of facility operations with a continued curiosity to learn more about all of the functioning aspects at Westview. I especially value his cohesion across multiple departments here, and I know that he has become a trusted teammate throughout our organization.”
