As someone that experienced the labels “defiant”, “oppositional”, etc. while growing up, I understand the harm that can be done. We prioritize assent and autonomy in our therapy. Forcing compliance is not only dangerous, it is reinforcing to the adult for the wrong reasons. We as caregivers, teachers, and therapists need to look in the mirror and question why we say no or why compliance is valued more than autonomy. You get respect when you give respect, not by demanding it.
Challenge: next time your kid “refuses” or says no, try figuring out why and meet them where they are. Provide explanations, choices, and encourage them to problem solve. Make the mundane tasks fun and engaging. Instead of saying, “Put on your shoes!” Or “Clean your room!”; Try saying, “It is time to leave, it seems like you are having a hard time getting ready, how can I help you get out the door?” Or “I’m going to start picking up your toys so you can find them easier, would you like to help me try to score points by throwing them in the baskets?”

This was posted after I shared my truth with her at a conference. I feel seen! I get flack all the time for being in ABA, but the reason I started Shweet Behavior is because I want to change how ABA is seen and done. I want to encourage parents to do the research, make sure the practice you choose is neurodivergent affirming. Stay away from the big companies that claim to be compassionate but have high turnover and sterile rooms with a table and chair facing the wall. Be diligent to find the care your children deserve! Ask questions like how much do you pay the RBTs? What is your turnover rate? What methods do you use? How would you handle this situation (worst case scenario)? Do you individualize goals? Do you teach self-management and coping skills?

I could go on, but it is highly important to stop supporting money mill ABA and find a small BCBA led company that practices what they preach.

We do not create robots. We provide support for children in a tough world that is not meant for us. Why make things harder? Be a safe person and a safe place.

People keep asking: “if ABA therapy is becoming neurodiversity-affirming, why not rename it?”
Totally fair question!

The name “Applied Behavior Analysis” describes a scientific field, not a brand.
It’s the study of how behavior changes in response to the environment.

What’s changing isn’t the science itself,
but how it’s applied.

For example, we can’t change the principles of chemistry, but we can decide whether to make medicine or poison. Same idea.

The term is tied to insurance codes, research journals, and state laws. Renaming it outright would take DECADES and would significantly disrupt access to support.

Keeping the name but changing the meaning holds the profession accountable.

Additionally, if we renamed every field with a dark past, we’d run out of acronyms by next Tuesday.

Take for example, the field of gynecology, if you aren’t familiar with the origins, I encourage you to look it up…it’s horrific.

And as a final note: if you’ve read this far and DISAGREE…unfortunately, they don’t keep calling it ABA because Kaelynn Partlow thinks it’s a good idea. 🤷🏼‍♀️

If you must release your grievances in the comments,
be my guest…but there’s literally nothing I can do about it,
so don’t expect it to change just because you explained why you think I’m wrong.

In my opinion, renaming a field doesn’t rebuild trust; changing how people experience it does.
