How to Treat Canker Sores When You Have Braces 😬

If you have braces, you may notice canker sores pop up more often. Brackets and wires can rub against the inside of your cheeks or lips, causing irritation, especially when your mouth is adjusting.

Here’s how to help soothe and heal canker sores:
🦷 Use orthodontic wax
🦷 Rinse with warm salt water
🦷 Apply over-the-counter oral gels or pastes made for canker sores
🦷 Avoid spicy, acidic, or crunchy foods
🦷 Keep your mouth clean

The good news? Most canker sores heal on their own within 7–10 days.

The ideal time for an orthodontic evaluation is around age 7. At this age, Dr.Homon can spot jaw growth issues, crowding, or bite problems early. Even if braces aren’t needed yet.

Many kids start braces between ages 9–14, when teeth and jaws are still developing, making treatment more efficient.

That said, it’s never too late! Teens and adults can achieve great results too!
