🎤🔊Let's Talk About It:

There's Capitalism in Mental Health Access too...Mental health in America operates within a capital-driven system, where care is tied to insurance, employment, and ability to pay. Prevention is underfunded, while crisis care is overutilized in place of prevention. Wellness becomes a commodity, instead of a right. This creates a reality where therapy is available but not accessible. Resources exist but they're not equitably distributed. Healing is marketed but not always reachable & tangible. For communities of color, this is compounded by lower rates of insurance coverage or underinsurance. Workforce shortages in culturally competent providers, mistrust of systems due to historical harm, economic barriers that prioritize survival over self-care. These are Social Determinants of Health in REAL LIFE...for example, a parent working two jobs cannot attend therapy sessions during business hours. A young person experiencing trauma has no safe space to process it, transportation limits access to care, food insecurity, housing instability, and community violence create chronic stress environments. Schools and neighborhoods are often sorely under-resourced. These conditions influence AND shape mental health. We often hear statistics like: "Many individuals who need care never receive it". But the deeper truth is it’s an access and equity gap. And even beyond access, there’s a belonging gap. Do people see themselves reflected in care?? Do they feel safe seeking help? Are the services culturally responsive and trauma-informed and healing-centered? People are suffering RIGHT NOW, so the question is "What We Must Do Moving Forward?" My suggestions are 1. Reframe Mental Health as a Public Good & Service, NOT a luxury. Not a privilege. A necessity! 2. Invest in Community-Based Solutions, fund grassroots organizations, peer support, and culturally grounded care. 3. Prioritize Prevention Support in schools, families, and neighborhoods BEFORE crisis occurs 4. Build a Representative Workforce, increase providers who reflect the communities they serve. 5. Align Policy with Lived Experience. Center voices of those most impacted in decision-making spaces. You cannot talk about healing without addressing the conditions that harm. If we are serious about mental health, we must be serious about EQUITY. You cannot build resilient communities without investing in the people who have been expected to survive without support.

“A Season of Peace: Caring for Your Mind, Body, and Spirit During the Holidays” is the topic for a webinar offered by the Church of the Brethren’s Intercultural Ministries on Dec. 16 at 12 noon (Eastern time).
“Amid packed schedules, ministry responsibilities, family expectations, and unspoken grief, the holidays can overwhelm even the strongest hearts,” said an announcement. “This uplifting session invites clergy, congregants, and caregivers to step into a moment of rest and renewal.
“We will discuss practical ways to maintain emotional, mental, and spiritual health while honoring the rhythms of Sabbath rest, self-care, and sacred boundaries. Through scripture, reflection, and evidence-based wellness practices, participants will learn how to cultivate peace, reconnect with purpose, and hold space for others—without losing themselves in the process.”
The speakers are:
— Kenya Chaney Madison of Kaleidoscope Solutions & Co., a healing-centered practitioner, mental health strategist, and spiritual wellness advocate who has served as senior director of Healthier Delray Beach, Fla., an initiative launched in 2014 to strengthen behavioral health in Delray Beach’s historically Black neighborhoods; and
— Founa A. Badet, director of Intercultural Ministries who also is part of the district executive leadership team in Atlantic Southeast District, a “circuit rider” for Haitian Creole multi-vocational pastors, pastor of the Jesus Lounge Ministry in Delray Beach, and certified in Mental Health First Aid from the National Council of Mental Wellbeing.
