Reactions are automatic. Responses are intentional.

When a back injury ended Richard Crimi’s law enforcement career, he didn’t just recover physically, he rebuilt his mindset from the ground up. Now he trains first responders, military personnel, and federal agencies to harness the power of thought to improve performance,
emotional regulation, and relationships.

Here’s the truth:

In law enforcement, cynicism can keep you alive, but unchecked, it can also poison your communication, your marriage, and your sense of self.

Richard shares how your inner narrative, those what-if scenarios and negative rehearsals, can quietly erode your wellbeing and connection. With intentional mindset work, that script can be rewritten.

In our podcast episode, we talk about:

✔ The spillover of job stress into family life

✔ How to assess and redirect negative thought loops

✔ Building confidence through mindset preparation

✔ Gratitude, affirmations, and perspective-taking in daily life

✔ How reactions turn into responses and why that matters at home

Whether you’re in the field, married to someone who is, or supporting first responder wellness, this is a conversation that matters.

National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives Conference today in Orlando!! Honored to be presenting for the SAFLEO Program and talking about Combating Law Enforcement Su***de.

Had great interaction and discussion. It was raw for some including personal connection for themselves or the recent loss (2 weeks ago) of a now retired colleague.

I was honored to have Sonia Quinnoes, Director of IIR and former NAWLEE President in my session along with Will Balling and Chris Gandia with VALOR Program!

The SAFLEO mission is to heighten the awareness of the problem of su***de in law enforcement and prevent officer deaths by su***de. Effective su***de prevention training must have a comprehensive approach, focusing on occupational risks and support from law enforcement agencies, colleagues, families, and friends. This goes beyond being just an agency responsibility. We all must prioritize this issue; it is critical and could mean the difference between life and death. Reach out to for more information for the grant funded research, resources, and online and on-site training!

Emotional armor helps officers survive the job, but it can quietly wear down your relationships.

Zachary Saenz has spent eight years in law enforcement, doing what so many officers do: pushing through, compartmentalizing, and staying “fine.”

But it caught up with him, at home in his relationship and in his mental health.

With support (and some real honesty from his fiancée), he found a trauma therapist, started setting boundaries, and learned how to reconnect.

Now, he shares his journey through powerful, emotional artwork that reflects the real mental toll of the job.

On the latest episode of the Code4Couples podcast, Zachary talks about:

✔️ How emotional shutdown became his norm

✔️ What therapy helped him understand about himself

✔️ The role of art in processing trauma

✔️ His message to other officers: You’re more than the badge.

How has your emotional armor impacted your relationship?

Emotional Armor protects officers on the job and allows spouses to watch their officer walk out the door without immense fear. We must take off the armor for our mental health and relational health.

Check out Zachary’s artwork and you may connect with what is under your armor.

We know that law enforcement takes a toll, not just on officers but on their loved ones too. That’s why we’re talking about
, the only 24/7 peer support line for law enforcement officers, retirees, and their families.

In our latest Code4Couples episode, I sit down with retired NYPD officer and volunteer Deborah Schwartz to break down how this incredible resource provides confidential, judgment-free support for officers and their families.

✔️ is staffed entirely by retired law enforcement officers who GET IT.

✔️ Officers, spouses, parents, and adult children can all call in for support.

✔️ It’s 100% confidential—no names, no records, just a listening ear from someone who understands.

✔️ You DON’T have to be in crisis to call. Even if you just need to talk, is there for you.

Why does this matter? Because no officer should feel alone in their struggles. Whether it’s job stress, loneliness on shift, family struggles, or transitioning to retirement, is a safe place to talk it out.

Listen now and learn how you or a loved one can use this resource when you need it most!
