When there is something happening in our outside world, we most often times react to that situation... but upon closer review, we are only reacting to processing our internal experience of what we are observing.

This is because we perceive the world through our 5 senses... we aren’t actually reacting responding to the external world itself, but rather we are reacting to the sensations that the external event brings upon us...

It is then that the mind is able to instantaneously assess the sensation as pleasant, unpleasant or neutral...

For example, a happy thought could bring about a tingling sensation that is pleasant... on the other hand, a loud, disturbing noise would be unpleasant... And then, seeing someone walking by on the street would be a neutral sensation...

When we have a pleasant sensation, our innate reflex is to chase this feeling... emotions of excitement or yearning may follow. Then when we experience an unpleasant sensation, our reflex is to run, or avoid it, causing us to worry, feel fear, or even irritation...

It is thus recommended to be mindful of the sensations in the body. We are then able to cut right through the chain of reactions, stopping our habitual reflexes to thoughts and emotions. This will bring us much more peace and calm in life...
