“Sustainable urgency”
✨
A term that came to me after the Miami Pulse shooting. When I needed the reminder that the headlines would fade, the news cycle would be 24/7, and our nervous systems could not keep up. I’ve returned again and again to this phrase because despite my best wishes for a pause button the world keeps spinning events like cortisol shots.
If we keep trying to keep up, we will inevitably burn out. If we try to be everything for everyone, we won’t be able to continue going on, which is the hope of capitalism + urgency culture. This term, sustainable urgency, is a reminder and a practice to slow down, work against urgency culture, and make space for feelings. Personally, it means readjusting my pace so I can act in a way that is congruent with my needs and supports myself, my long-term self, and the community around me.
How does this sit with you?
There is so much to hold, witness, and grieve, right now, and i am right there alongside you of trying to figure out how to navigate it all.
In the coming months, I’ll share more on how to apply sustainable urgency to your everyday life.
For now, sustainable urgency is:
A call to action.
A call to stay.
A call to pause.
A call to know how I do it is different from how you will.
A call to not get stuck in process
And a reminder that
life keeps happening despite our best wishes for a pause button.
We were not meant to move this fast
It’s okay to slow down
It’s okay to not know it all
And we need to simultaneously care for ourselves + each other to initiate the societal shift that we need.
