Why are horses a release for people?

Horses are a release for people because they strip life back to its simplest, most honest form.
In a world full of noise, emails, deadlines, expectations, horses remind us that real communication isn’t about words. It’s about presence. It’s about energy, intention, awareness.

When you’re with a horse, your words mean nothing, but your actions, your body language, your energy? That’s everything. You can’t fake confidence with a horse. You can’t lie with your posture. You can’t manipulate with charm or excuses. Horses reflect back exactly who you are in that moment, your fear, your calm, your frustration, your peace.

That’s why working with horses is 90% self-reflection. They force you to get quiet. To slow down. To pay attention not only to them, but to yourself. Your breathing, your posture, your thoughts. They draw you out of your head and into your body, into the present.

It takes us back to a time when survival, connection, and trust weren’t built on promises or conversations. They were built on consistency, energy, and respect. Horses remind us how to just be, without the layers of complication life piles on.

That’s why so many people find healing with them. They don’t care about your job, your past, your social status. They care about your energy in this moment, and nothing feels more freeing than being seen for your truest self, without judgment, without words.

Let’s be real — personally, horses might be the most emotionally healing creatures we’ve ever known , I know mine are 🩷🙏

But professionally?
They are not the therapist.

They are the co-facilitator.
The boundary bringer.
The soft exhale
The truth without spoken language.

But they are not here to absorb your client’s emotional load hour upon hour.
Not the emotional sponge.
Not the silent fixer.
Not the unpaid mental health professional.

🐴 We hold the container.
✋🏽 We regulate the space.
❤️ We ensure consent — for horses and humans.

This work is powerful — its feels like its almost magic.
It’s trauma-informed. Consent-led. Co-regulated. Boundaried. Ethical.
And deeply relational.

Let’s do it right.

Dear Friends,

We urgently need your support. Yesterday, we assisted law enforcement with an animal welfare investigation in Townsend, VT, which led to the seizure of 39 horses. It was an incredibly long and emotional day, requiring a massive team effort.

Many of you know that we regularly assist law enforcement, and care for and house animals seized in cruelty cases, but you might not realize that every aspect of our assistance in these efforts—from the initial investigation to long-term horse care for those that remain at our organization, is entirely funded by the Dorset Equine Rescue. There is no government or state funding for animal welfare organizations in this work. We are so greatful to the other organizations who have partnered with us and offered to take in horses from this case.

These operations are complex and unpredictable. We often don’t know how many animals will need help until we are on-site, making planning and resource allocation a challenge. Costs include transportation, veterinary care, medications, farrier services, feed, and housing—expenses that quickly add up, especially when horses are in severe condition.

We have become a critical partner in these vital efforts to help remove horses from neglectful situations. However, the financial strain of these cases often lasts months or even years, as legal processes prevent us from adopting out the animals during that time.

Today, we need your help to cover the costs of this crucial rescue mission. Your donation will directly support transportation, emergency medical care, staff time, feed, and the ongoing needs of these horses.

We’ve made a promise to law enforcement and, most importantly, to these horses. With your generosity, we can honor that commitment and ensure these animals receive the care they desperately need.

Please consider making a donation today to help us meet this urgent need. Together, we can make a profound difference in their lives.

Dogs can detect emotional changes in humans faster than we can detect them in each other! 🐶💖

In animal-assisted mental health therapy, dogs often respond to subtle shifts in a client’s mood, body language, or even scent—sometimes before the client is consciously aware of their own emotional state.

This makes therapy dogs incredibly effective co-therapists, especially for clients dealing with anxiety, PTSD, or emotional dysregulation. Their calming presence and intuitive responses help build trust, promote emotional safety, and encourage deeper self-awareness!
