Such a lovely Saturday night yesterday walking with the incredible mamas of Wash Park and we did a little pelvic floor overview and education, what to look for in your body postpartum, how those concerns are treated and a Q and A. Just getting to meet neighbors, friends and fellow mamas makes it all worth it. Education and community outreach is the icing on top. Thanks to everyone who joined, it was lovely💓🧸

It was so nice getting to pop up at today!🤩

Some of the amazing people I met today:

Mama with a tight c section scar

Mama with hip tightness not relieved by traditional methods

Gentleman with chronic pain from an old tailbone and sacrum fracture

Pregnant mama at 38 weeks getting ready for delivery

Mama of a 4 year old with core imbalances

Hairdresser and mom of 7 year old with hip and back pain from standing for work

And a couple of young ladies with leakage on impact and with stress (unrelated to any prior pregnancy)

One of the best parts of my job is getting to educate people on the muscle, bones, ligaments and joints that make up the center of our body, their function (or dysfunction), and most importantly how empowering it is that help is out there. If you have any of the above, or other pelvic floor, core, hip, back or neck pain, don’t suffer. We have so much to offer you. If you are already seeing an awesome practitioner, I salute you for taking your health so seriously🫶🏻🧘🏻‍♀️

I love this! So happy to support an amazing brand. Can’t wait to meet some great local mamas!

💗Understanding Rib Flare Postpartum💗

Are you experiencing tightness in your bra after giving birth? Do you feel stiffness in your ribs when lying on your side or notice limited expansion during inhalation? If your baby favored one side of your belly throughout your pregnancy, you might be dealing with rib flare.

What is Rib Flare?
Rib flare can manifest as an outward protrusion of the ribs, often accompanied by discomfort and restricted breathing.

What Can You Do About It?
There are several effective strategies:

🔹Manual Therapy: Techniques like rib mobilizations can enhance rib mobility, while diaphragm release work can alleviate breathing restrictions.

🔹Core Muscle Coordination: Strengthening and coordinating your core muscles is crucial for maintaining proper rib alignment.

🔹Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy: Consulting a pelvic floor PT can significantly improve your posture, breathing capacity, and overall flexibility.

🔹Targeted Exercises: Specific exercises can support rib alignment and enhance mobility.

🔹Self Mobilization: Incorporating self-mobilization techniques can be helpful in managing rib flare.

If you’re interested in learning more, send me a DM for a video demonstration of my favorite postpartum self rib mobilization techniques! ❤️🤩

✨Diastasis Recti✨

Newer studies suggests that 100% of women by their 35th week of pregnancy have DRA – measured by 16mm wide, just below the belly button.

So what can we do about this? Early intervention and treatment is key!

What does a postpartum evaluation for diastasis recti typically include?

We take a look at the width AND depth of a diastasis in order to determine its overall level of pathology and to make a game plan, but just testing isn’t enough.

We must also look at how the abdominal muscles are responding under tension. When an outside force is applied or a lever arm is made more challenging for a patient do we see doming, breath holding, compensatory strategies? At what point do we need to begin working?

We also look at some key manual therapy techniques such as rib mobility, tightness in the re**us attachment points and obliques that may be contributing to a rib flare further separating a diastasis. We look at thoracolumbar (mid to low back) tension and fascial restrictions. Breathing with pelvic floor and core activation and its coordination is also key. These are all just surface level items that are initiated as part of a diastasis evaluation.

If you are newly postpartum or are pregnant and having trouble with creating good tension in the abs, have low back pain and feel a lot of downward pressure or separation, let’s chat! I will always make 15 minute to share tips and tricks and schedule an evaluation. Let’s get to the root❤️🫶🏻

Dr. Sydney here!🤩

Understanding the differences between vaginismus and vulvodynia is crucial for better health and well-being. These diagnoses get “thrown around” a lot, but what does this medical jargon mean?!? What is the difference and what can we do?

In today’s post, we break down key details about these conditions from symptoms to different names and anatomical locations.

Did you know that the prevalence of vaginismus is 1-6% in those with female anatomy? studies also show pelvic floor PT to be effective in up to 80% of women with these pelvic pain conditions. Let’s empower ourselves with knowledge and remember that pelvic PTs are trained to help you relax and recover from pain and concerns in intimate places! We will get to the root. Questions or concerns? Shoot me a DM and let’s find time to chat💪✨
