Our gastroenterology team has performed the nation’s first procedure using a biodegradable stent for patients with certain pancreatic conditions.
The device, ARCHIMEDES, is for patients with pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, and other conditions. Rather than require an additional procedure to remove a traditional stent — typically required two to four weeks after placement — ARCHIMEDES slowly dissolves, reducing risk of infection.
“Most patients are able to leave the facility within 30 to 40 minutes and won’t feel the stent at all,” says Munish Ashat, MD. “By improving their recovery, we can reduce further discomfort and avoid complications.”
