This week’s Kid Captain for Iowa State’s football game against Arizona is Marcus, a 6-year-old from Story City. When he was 9 months old, Marcus was standing up holding onto a coffee table in the family living room when he lost his balance, fell backward and hit his head on the hard floor. He suffered a brain bleed and needed surgery immediately. His parents were in shock and doctors at Blank Children’s Hospital warned them they didn’t know if he would survive the surgery. Thankfully, Marcus is now in first grade in Story City and doing well.
He still has physical therapy and occupational therapy but otherwise is a happy, healthy boy who loves building things, machinery, playing outside and being a great big brother to his two brothers.
His mom says being a Kid Captain for Iowa State is a full circle moment. When Marcus was recovering at Blank Children’s she says she saw Kid Captain posters around the hospital and dreamed that one day he would be on the field at Jack Trice as a healthy boy. And here we are!
