This week we had the pleasure of helping someone bring their wife home from a facility. The facility was wonderful and provided great care - it just wasn't where our clients wanted to be. Years ago, they promised each other that they would remain together at home. Things got difficult. Dementia came, and so did the overwhelm. The family moved this loved one, thinking it was best. And perhaps it was best at the time. There was A LOT going on with both of them aging and family far away.
If there is one thing I've learned in 20 years of working in the senior care industry - it's that things are complicated and deeply personal. Emotions are high, everyone is tired, and decisions have to be made in a hurry. Health complications happen suddenly and families make decisions quickly - most often they make the best decision, given the time and circumstances that they have.
I can't tell you how proud I am to help this family. Home is where they always wanted to be - they just didn't know how to do it. They tried a home care agency before the facility. Their perspective was that each Caregiver came and went - and many didn't have experience. It became more of a burden than a help - to train each new person and get everyone used to one another.
It took 3 weeks to finally sit down and visit. Once we did - I knew we (Hallmark Homecare) could help. We are recruiters and matchmakers. We met with the family, to determine their ideal Caregiver profile. We presented the independent Caregiver whom we had already completed a background check for, multiple interviews and reference checks completed - someone with 10+ years of serving as a Caregiver.
We facilitated the direct hire relationship between the the responsible party and the Caregiver. We are still involved, as a liaison - providing support when needed, placing insurance, and providing our 3rd party platform for ease of scheduling, payment and compliance.
The Caregiver earns more by being employed by the family. She's ecstatic. The family pays a a little less than what an agency charges. They have us in their corner if needed and to provide that easy of payment and peace of mind of that someone has verified the quality of Caregiver in their home.
In August of 2026 I exited from the multi-million traditional homecare agency that I owned. Why? Because I believe in the Hallmark Homecare model where GREAT Caregivers have the potential to earn more; and families benefit from more control, consistency and dedicated personalized care.
