In the moments immediately following the death of a loved one, it can be difficult to think clearly or know what to do first.
If a death occurs outside of a hospital or hospice setting, one of the first steps is notifying emergency personnel by calling 911 so the death can be legally pronounced. If your loved one is under hospice care or in a medical facility, the care team will help guide you through those initial steps.
And then, just as importantly, take a breath.
In those first hours, families often feel pressure to make decisions quickly while trying to process an overwhelming loss. But in most situations, there is time. It is okay to pause. It is okay to sit quietly, call someone you trust, step outside for fresh air, or simply rest before moving forward.
You do not have to navigate every decision all at once.
During some of life’s most difficult moments, compassion, patience, and support matter more than rushing to the next step.
