A child hesitated to try something new this week.
The old story sounded like:
“I’m not good at this.”
It wasn’t loud but it was familiar.
The farm told a different story.
The sheep paused & didn’t rush. The space stayed calm. The moment stretched just enough for curiosity to step in.
And then… they tried.
Not perfectly. But honestly.
Sometimes inherited stories don’t disappear all at once.
Sometimes they soften just enough to make room for a new experience.
What story are you gently rewriting right now?

On the farm, animals don’t carry inherited stories the way humans do.
A horse doesn’t believe it’s “too much” or “not enough.”
A goat doesn’t question whether it belongs.
They respond to what’s happening now; to safety, connection, and environment. This is why working with animals can feel so different. It offers a break from old narratives. A chance to experience yourself without the weight of those stories.
As author Gabor Maté writes:
“The attempt to escape from pain is what creates more pain.”
On the farm, we practice trying to not escape the painful story & instead we create space for a new one.

What is one belief you carry about yourself that feels very old?
Something that sounds like:
“I’ve always been this way…”
Now gently ask:
Where did this story come from?
And… is it still true?
As author James Baldwin wrote:
“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”
Awareness is where new stories begin.

Many of the stories we tell ourselves didn’t start with us.
Research in developmental psychology shows that beliefs about worth, safety, and identity are often shaped early through environment, relationships, and repeated experiences.
These patterns can become automatic, living in the nervous system as expectations about how the world works.
Psychologist Dr. Bruce Perry emphasizes that early experiences shape how the brain organizes around safety, connection, and stress.
The good news: these patterns are not fixed.
Through new, safe, relational experiences — like those found in equine-facilitated learning — the brain and body can begin to update the story.

Some of the stories children carry are inherited through generations. Stories about how they “should” learn, behave, or succeed. Stories about being “too much,” “not enough,” or “different.”

Inclusive Hooves Farm Camp at Happy Hooves offers a different experience.
Designed for children ages 7–12 with learning differences, this camp creates a space where kids can explore connection, confidence, and regulation through hands-on experiences with horses, animals, and nature.
Led by a special education teacher from Ann Arbor Public Schools, the program is grounded in research showing that experiential, nature-based learning supports emotional regulation, attention, and social development.

As educator John Dewey wrote:
“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”

At Inclusive Hooves, children don’t just learn skills, they also they experience belonging.

Grey challenges the story that strength has to be intimidating. 🤍🐴
He is sturdy, steady, and deeply friendly. Grey doesn’t need to dominate a space to feel powerful. He offers calm presence, consistency, and trust.

Watching Grey reminds us that some of the strongest people we know are also the gentlest.
Strength can sound like kindness.
Strength can feel like steadiness.
Strength can look like making others feel safe.

Maybe the story isn’t: “I need to be harder to be strong.”
Maybe it’s: “I can be soft and strong at the same time.”

On the farm, strength shows up in subtle ways.
A horse chooses to rejoin the herd after conflict.
A goat keeps trying a puzzle until it figures it out.
A sheep stays curious even when cautious.

None of it is flashy. All of it matters.
Animals remind us that strength is not about dominance, it’s about staying engaged with life.

As author Pema Chödrön writes:
“Nothing ever goes away until it has taught us what we need to know.”

Think of a challenge you’ve already survived.
What strengths did you use that perhaps no one else saw?
Patience? Endurance? Asking for help? Starting over? Staying kind?
We often overlook our quiet strengths because they don’t match the loud stories we’ve been taught.
Strength is not always visible. Sometimes it lives in persistence, tenderness, and trying again.

Spring is a season that reminds us of growth and strength. Each day new growth sprouts up in nature 🩷 what is sprouting up inside of you?

Psychologists studying resilience have found that one of the strongest predictors of well-being is not toughness, its adaptive capacity. In simple terms: the ability to recover, adjust, and remain connected under stress.
Research from the American Psychological Association consistently shows that resilience grows through supportive relationships, meaning-making, and self-regulation.
Horses model this naturally. They shift, respond, and reorganize in real time without losing connection to themselves or the herd.
In equine-facilitated learning, we practice that same kind of strength: flexible, grounded, and relational.
