Now that it is warming up…finally!!

Water play is one of the single most powerful sensory play methods a kiddo can experience! Various water play activities can involve olfactory, visual, tactile, auditory, proprioception, and vestibular….and taste, too, if you let it!

Core strength is often an underestimated skill…and often a missed deficit!

Decreased core strength can present as increased movement or being “wiggly”, increased leaning on desk/table/walls, decreased fine motor skills, decreased attention to task, and more!

This impacts daily tasks, school demands, play skills, and overall independence!

Understanding emotions is a big part of our everyday lives! Both understanding our own emotions and understand the emotions of those around us. This skill plays into out empathy and our overall level of social skills!

When working on this skill with our clients, we use an evidence-based approach with The Zones of Regulation that was actually developed by an occupational therapist!

This curriculum uses colors and categories emotions by those colors. This method pairs a skill that most kids have mastered with a new and often complicated concept to help out kids understand the spectrum of emotions a bit easier!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the great moms, grandmas, aunts, and caregivers that do so much for your littles!

Without you there would be no pediatric therapy!

But in all seriousness, mom-ing is hard. It’s long days and endless sacrifice. Just know that we see you and we appreciate you!

Enjoy your day, you deserve it!

Stimming is a way that some of us regulate our Central Nervous System.

Some people stim in smaller, more discrete manners such as bouncing their leg, tapping their toes, or rubbing threir hand on a textured surface.

Others stim with larger, more obvious movements like rocking, jumping, hand flapping.

Stimming is something that we embrace because we know that it makes our clients’ bodies feel more comfortable. It will often increase in times of upset or excitement, but can fluctuate for many reasons.

While we never interfere with stimming as it is a very powerful method of regulation, we will attempt to reframe stimming methods if they are potentially harmful to oneself or others.

Stimming is unique to each person and can be part of one’s personality!

Our oral sensory system is one of the most sensitive of the 8 systems.

It is also closely tied with the olfactory (smell) system!

With two systems working together, there is a lot more sensory input for the brain to organize and respond to. This can sometimes be a lot for our kiddos who are more sensitive to sensory inputs. This results in adverse responses that can present as limited food preferences resulting in a list of “safe” foods, avoiding mixing of textures to limit some processing demands, gagging at certain textures that are too much to handle, and more.

At Thrive, we can address sensory processing and tolerance levels to help address feeding difficulties. Increasing food tolerances helps to increase nutritional intake as well as participate more fully in social and cultural events that involve food!
