Joshua Bates School

On August 22, 2008 (17 years ago today), the Joshua Bates School at 731 Harrison Ave in the South End was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 2 1/2 story Romanesque Revival brick building was designed by architect Arthur H. Vinal (of Boston) and built in 1884. The building features massive arches and picturesque round-topped windows.

The Joshua Bates School was named for an influential schoolmaster in the Boston School system. American poet James Hercules Sutton attended the school from 1947 to 1951.

The Joshua Bates School closed in 1975 as a consequence of court-ordered desegregation.

In 2003, the building was renovated and in 2006 rooms began being rented (at below-market prices) as apartments and studios to assist struggling, talented Boston artists. The artists currently living and working in the Joshua Bates building represent a variety of mediums including painters, sculptors, photographers and multi-media

Next Stop Wonderland

Next Stop Wonderland is a romantic comedy that was released August 21, 1998 (27 years ago today). It was first shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 1998 and was an audience favorite. A bidding war resulted in Miramax Films paying $6 million for the film's North American distribution rights. Next Stop Wonderland received average reviews, but only grossed $3.3 million at the box-office.

Next Stop Wonderland was filmed in Boston and a few surrounding communities. Boston backdrops included Copley Plaza, New England Aquarium, On the Park Restaurant, Public Garden, Union Park, Comm Ave and East Boston. There were scenes shot in Somerville including Davis Square and The Burren.

The plot: Erin, a night-shift nurse was cruelly dumped by her boyfriend. Her mother places a wildly inaccurate personal ad in the local paper. After she dates a variety of men who are all wrong for her, she meets Andre, a handsome Brazilian music expert who invites her to Sao Paulo. Although Erin likes Andre, her Mr. Right is actually Alan, a plumber she's never met, though the two keep crossing paths. Trying to change his career, Alan is studying marine biology. However, Alan is indebted to a local mob boss, who wants him to kidnap a star blowfish from the local aquarium. The conclusion: Erin and Alan end up together.

In 1985 the remaining stables were converted to residential apartments.

Tony C Gets Hit By a Pitch

On August 18, 1967 (58 years ago today) Sox player, Anthony "Tony C" Conigliaro in a game against the California Angels, was hit by a pitch. Tony C was batting against pitcher Jack Hamilton. He was hit on his left cheekbone and was carried off the field in a stretcher. Tony C sustained a linear fracture of the left cheekbone, dislocated jaw and severe damage to his left retina. The batting helmet he was wearing did not have the protective ear-flap that has since become standard, partly due to this incident.

Tony C was a favorite "hometown player" having grown up in Revere and attending St. Mary's High School in Lynn. He began playing pro-ball as a teenager.

The 1967 Sox season was dubbed the "Impossible Dream" season. Stars of the team were Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Lornborg, Rico Petrocelli, Reggie Smith, Joe Foy, George Scott, Ken Harrelson and of course, Tony C. The Sox won the American League that year but lost the World Series in seven games.
