A year ago, if you’d let Bean the Cowboy Corgi loose in the yard with this many chickens… well, let’s just say we’d be having an unplanned fried chicken dinner. 🍗🐓

Fast forward to today — she struts through the middle of the flock like she’s at a Sunday stroll, completely ignoring the feathered buffet all around her. 😅

Proud doesn’t even cover it. My little chicken assassin-in-training has officially retired from her life of crime and taken up a new career as… a very short farm manager. 👩‍🌾🐾

Good girl, Bean. Who knew a chicken-chasing corgi could become head of poultry relations?

🍂 As the seasons begin shift, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to get Thyme & Tails ready for the colder months ahead. Life on the homestead is about creating rhythms that make caring for our animals smoother and keep them happy year-round.

Here’s what we’ve been up to over the past few weeks:
🐇 Rabbit upgrades – new stands and an automatic watering system to make daily chores easier (and less icy water refills in winter!).
🐥 Chicken comforts – a new brooder for our littles and a roosting ladder so the adults can perch snugly at night.
🐐 Goat convenience – a brand-new barn door for our buck so he can head straight to pasture whenever he pleases.

Each small project adds up to smoother days, cozy animals, and peace of mind knowing we’re better prepared for the chillier season ahead. ❄️💚

I didn’t mean to go quiet on here… but life, as it often does, had other plans. Ever since we returned to the land, it’s felt like stepping into a slow transformation — one I didn’t realize I needed. The kind that whispers instead of shouts. The kind that requires more observing than doing. More patience than plans. This little caterpillar stopped me in my tracks the other day. Bright and bold, but still. Waiting. Trusting the process. And in that moment, I saw myself.Though I’ve been quieter online, I’ve been fully present behind the scenes — slowly preparing our farm stand, building our online store, and mapping out eBooks and mini courses I hope to share in the near future, both online and in person. We’re learning this land… what she needs, how to care for her, and how to honor the life she holds — from the tiniest crawling creature to the big dreams we’re building.Thank you for your grace in the quiet seasons. I may be hidden, but I’m not idle.🦋 Something beautiful is coming.

If you’ve ever waged war on a plant, you know the kind of fight that starts as a gentle tug and ends in a full-blown, sweat-stained pasture purge. Meet my nemesis: crown vetch.

Pretty? Sure. Innocent-looking? Absolutely. But don’t let that soft, pea-like foliage fool you. This stuff creeps in like it owns the place—choking out native forage and laughing in the face of goats and horses who’d rather eat dirt than touch it.

We’ve tried it all—pulling, smothering, praying. This spring we’re testing solarization and reseeding strategies in a battle plan that feels more like trench warfare than gardening. It’s slow progress, but we’re in it for the long haul. Because protecting our pastures means protecting the soil, the herd, and the health of the whole homestead.

If you’re dealing with this beast too, I see you. May your roots be weak and your shovel be strong.

When you have plenty of nesting boxes but they all want the same one.
This gal wasn’t about to give up her favorite spot—no matter who else had already claimed it!
Life in the henhouse is full of personality, pecking order politics, and the occasional shared maternity leave.

Farm life never fails to keep us chuckling.

We finally finished the horse pasture! After what felt like 40 years in the wilderness (or maybe just a few very long weeks), the horses have fresh grass, freedom, and apparently zero plans to help with the next phase.

It was a test of patience, persistence, and post hole digging… but praise the Lord, it’s done.

Now—on to the goat pasture.
Because nothing says spiritual refinement quite like fencing for creatures who consider barbed wire a suggestion.

Lord, give us strength. And maybe more t-posts.

This… is poison hemlock. Not a w**d. Not a nuisance. A full-blown threat hiding in plain sight across our pastures.

It doesn’t care that we raise animals holistically. It doesn’t care that our children play nearby. It’s here, and it’s toxic — to goats, horses, humans, and just about everything in between.

We found our first patch this spring. Since then, it’s been an all-out war. Suited up like hazmat farmers, we’ve pulled, bagged, and solarized every cluster we can find. Not just to clear land — but to keep our animals safe and preserve the land we’re stewarding for the next generation.

This isn’t pretty homesteading. It’s gritty, back-breaking, sometimes scary work. But it’s part of the job. And every time we rip one of these toxic invaders out by the root, we take back a little more ground.

Here’s to reclaiming pastures, the hard way.

In the stillness of the barn, where straw meets sunbeam,
A goat rests easy, and two young chicks find shelter.
No fences between them, no reason but trust.

This is the quiet rhythm of life at Thyme & Tails —
Where every creature finds its place,
And every day holds a moment worth remembering.

Sorry for the pause in the Tick Talk series—life on the farm had other plans! We’ve been racing the clock to get this fence up before we head to Colorado at the end of the month. The DIY tick spray is still on the way, so hang tight and stay tuned—it’s worth the wait!

Tick season is here—but so are the herbs that can help!
These powerful plants do more than just look and smell amazing… they also help keep ticks (and other bugs) at bay.

Whether you’re tucking them into your garden beds, around animal areas, or in pots by the door, these herbs make a difference—naturally.

Which ones are growing on your homestead (or which are you adding to your list)?
