On the left is Caleb today, with UNC-Chapel Hill Children’s Hospital behind him. (Literally and figuratively)
For comparison, the picture on the right was taken one year ago this month.
He had a long day today, but so far, all of his results are looking GREAT. His CBC is perfect. Do you know how awesome that is to see after a kid has fought leukemia?!
His chest X-ray was perfect. His echocardiogram is good. His bone age imaging is right on track. He’s growing. His lung function test (PFT), bone density, and a few labs are still pending.
It hit me riding home this evening: I thought of him as “doing good” a year ago. He certainly was compared to the year before that. However, last September, our boy had bilateral pleural effusions (fluid on the lungs-severe on one side), mild fluid around the heart, osteoporosis, gastritis and duodenitis so bad that he could hardly eat and had lost weight until he was about skin and bones. He wasn’t healthy. Today, he is SO much healthier! He’s about 30 lbs heavier, can eat all he wants, feels good, etc. God has brought him SO far!!
He did give us a little scare last week with swollen lymph nodes. Thankfully, they looked benign on the ultrasound and as long as the rest of the labs come back looking good, his oncologist is comfortable just having us monitor them and return in 6 months. Thank you for all your prayers! 😁

Biopsy results are back, and they’re all good! THANK YOU GOD! Thank you, everyone, for your prayers!

The pic is a portion of the most high tech lab report (ClonoSeq). They follow 3 cancerous precursor cell gene sequences in this report. It made me nervous last time (9/27/22). If you look down the numbers you’ll see why: 11/30/21 it was 2. Then 2/4/22 it was 168,067. ClonoSeq gave the warning that relapse was starting before the MRD/other tests did. I did NOT like when it changed from

Bone marrow biopsy went smoothly today. He’s a bit sore from 7 needles today: port access, biopsy, and 5 vaccinations! (He’s like a newborn starting all over with his shots—a necessary step after bone marrow transplant.) Thankfully he was sedated for 6/7.

Now we wait. It often takes 3 weeks for all the results to come back.

I pretend not to worry. He’s looking and feeling great, afterall! I pretend our life is normal, and I go to work and take care of others. I tell myself not to worry, and I shut down any negative thoughts as quickly as I can when they come, but…this is always a hard 3 weeks waiting. Then there’s often a hard week or so after the wait, if the results show any trace of precursors and I have to stand on faith and sequester the what if’s and worries back into their cage.

“Give it to God”-I know. That’s what I should do, and I do try my best to, but for moms of peds cancer warriors, worry tries to stick like superglue. Thanks for standing in faith and positivity with us. Thanks for lifting our boy up in prayer. I don’t know how to tell you eloquently, but it really does help bring peace when I pray for him myself—which always feels so inadequate in light of what I’m asking Him for—while knowing that my prayers aren’t the only whispers to the Heavens asking God to keep the cancer away and take care of my boy.

He looks good. He feels good. His labs are good. May all stay good. I’ll end on that note.

Caleb has a bone marrow biopsy this week, so say a prayer that we will get good results again. He is 8 months post transplant now. He has a head full of curls, is growing like a w**d, and feeling great. We’re hoping and praying for nothing but good news in 2023!
(Pic is not the best quality, but I love the genuine smile.)

He’s gone from being too weak to stand in the bathroom this spring, to pretty wheelchair dependent for even short walks, to hiking about 1.5 miles on uneven terrain with the family yesterday! It hasn’t happened overnight, but as I told him when he was tired in 2 of these pictures, this is part of the fight-the pushing forward a bit further when you don’t feel like it. That’s what warriors do, and I’m proud of our warrior.
We have something exciting happening next month, so building up his endurance will pay off for him! Results from the last biopsy were stable. Let’s LIVE life.
