I can remember this moment in my life so clearly. I stared at the computer screen, sobbing. Wondering if this is what my life was going to be like forever. I was so tired. Utterly exhausted after sleeping 8-10 hours and taking 2-3 hour naps during the day.

Grieving. Grieving for the bright, fun and exciting life I had once lived that was now a distant memory.

Confused as to how my body had betrayed me so deeply and why 5 doctors hadn't been able to give me any hope of healing. I remember, clear as day, when the original doctor gave me my PCOS diagnosis (and all the other not do fun things, like infertility). I asked what I could do to "fix this" and he said "nothing".

BINGE EATING AND PCOS....

Did you know that there is a large connection between the two?

Yep.

I can 100% say that I was one of those affected.

I would buy chocolate at the store and eat an entire block of Lindt Dark Chocolate Mint in the car on the home...and then hide the packaging.

I would buy a packet of chips or chocolate and hide them in the cupboard in a mixing bowl where Kris couldn't find them...and then eat them while he was out.

So many times!

Thankfully that is no longer an issue for me since balancing my hormones....but it is VERY common with PCOS for several reasons.

Here are a few:

Our blood sugar levels tend to be way out of whack, making us more likely to crave sugar...and once we start it is hard to stop

Higher androgens can lead to lower inhibition...so we just say, screw it, I'm gonna have the chocolate, who cares about the consequences

Weight management can be very difficult and depression and anxiety are often present. Feeling "bad" about our weight or feeling anxious can lead to cravings for sugar or refined carbs as they light up the feel good neurotransmitters in our brains, like serotonin.

We also tend to have funky satiety hormones...so we never really feel satiated from food.

If you have PCOS (or you are simply curious), I encourage you to do some research.

The numbers on eating disorders and PCOS is astounding.

The different symptoms, or features as we like to call them, of PCOS can be classified into 4 different areas: Clinical, Endocrine, Metabolic and Psychological.

You can see things can vary quite a bit...so just like any other hormone issue, remember that your hormone journey is YOURS.

Your diagnosis is YOURS.

It can be a completely different experience to mine or to someone else you know with the same condition...and that’s okay!!

What you are feeling and experiencing are REAL. Just because someone else may not understand it, doesn't mean that it isn't real.

Don't let others diminish your experience...Especially when it comes to PCOS as it is multifactorial and can impact several areas of your life.

If you've been following the mental health series, you know that your emotional wellness isn't all in your head...

You can't just think happy thoughts and get rid of depression, anxiety or apathy.

Instead, you need to look at the physiological reasons behind your emotional symptoms.

Apathy is one that many people struggle with.

It could be in the form of apathetic depression - the kind where you just want to lie in bed or on the couch and sleep...not where you are weeping and crying.

Perhaps you feel completely unmotivated to do anything...

I can promise you, you aren't just being lazy!

If your adrenals or thyroid are underperforming, you are going to find it really difficult to want to get up and do anything.

Same thing if you have low testosterone...

Or anything else you see on the graphic.

So, give yourself a bit of grace, and then be your own health advocate and find out what is going on so you can get to the root of the issue and fix it.

Mental Health -- It isn't all in your head!

I promise!

While I did a Bachelor's and a Master's in Psychology, and I do think that talk therapy is useful...

I do NOT believe that you can simply talk away something like anxiety. If it were that easy, we would all be happy, vibrant beings without any mental health issues, right?

Instead, I believe that the majority of our mental health struggles can be rooted in our physiology.

Unless you fix the physiology and have it function optimally, then it will be near impossible to get rid of the anxiety.

Just look at the list of physiological factors that could be contributing to your anxiety! And that isn't even exhaustive!

So, before you think that there is something wrong with you because you can't simply shake the anxiety, start digging and see if there are any areas physiologically that you need to work on.

This is so important to remember as you begin to improve your eating habits.

You are not "cutting the carbs" to get skinny..

You are removing all of the crap that is harmful to your physical and mental health.
To help you stay on track when you are faced with temptation, write a list of WHY you want to be healthy.....the real reason.

Not simply because you think it is the right thing to do.

How would your life be different if you had optimal health?

Figure out your why, and you will be far more motivated to make a positive lifestyle change

Did you know that it IS possible for you to increase your progesterone levels naturally?

It may not be the easiest thing to do as you need to make some tweaks to your diet and lifestyle, but it is totally doable!

I recommend the following:

1. Decrease all forms of stress - Physical, emotional, mental, low calorie dieting, not sleeping enough, over exercising, consuming refined carbs/sugar, inflammatory foods, etc

2. Increase your healthy fat intake

3. Increase your nutrient intake - especially zinc, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C

4. Supplement - You know I love supplements. Vitex is something I take daily to support my progesterone levels, and recommend you do too, if needed!

5. Balance your blood sugar

6. Cut the caffeine
