“This past year, a woman came to Amnion for an ultrasound after receiving a positive pregnancy test. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to do, caught between continuing the pregnancy or taking the abortion pill. As we talked, she began to lean toward carrying the pregnancy.
But once the ultrasound began, everything changed.
At first, her uterus appeared empty. Then we spotted something—what looked like a gestational sac, a fetal pole, and even a flickering heartbeat. But it wasn’t in the uterus. It was in her fallopian tube.
She had an ectopic pregnancy.
The baby was developing, but in the wrong place. She was immediately sent to the emergency room for life-saving surgery. Tragically, it meant losing both the baby and her fallopian tube.
In 18 years of obstetrics, our nurse practitioner had never seen a live ectopic pregnancy with a heartbeat. One of her first thoughts was: “Thank God she hadn’t taken the abortion pill.” If she had, the outcome could have been fatal.
