MYTH 5: Mental health support is expensive.

FACT: While mental health services can be costly without insurance, help is available. There are many programs available depending on your community. Call 211 for specific information and resources in your area. Also, some providers offer a sliding fee scale for people who meet certain income requirements. So please do not be afraid to call and ask for those rates. Additionally, at Defining New Beginnings we participate in the OPEN PATH COLLECTIVE. It is a nationwide resource offering mental health treatment for a reduced flat rate. Check our link for more information at https://openpathcollective.org/clinicians/danielle-bonner/

MYTH 4: Mental illness is a lifelong diagnosis.

FACT: Mental illness is treatable. It is possible to recover and even thrive following a mental illness. Recovery can involve the complete resolution of a mental health issue, but it can also be about having a renewed focus on personal control, resilience, and day-to-day functioning. Even with mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, which typically require lifelong symptom management, individuals can experience a very high quality of life with treatment.

TODAY IN BLACK HISTORY...

The Founder Rational Behavioral Therapy (1932-2016)

MAXIE CLARENCE MAULTSBY, JR., M.D.was the founder of the psychotherapeutic method, rational behavioral therapy. Through his work and therapeutic method, Dr. Maultsby explored emotional and behavioral self-management. His contributions included making emotional self-help a focus of scientific research. The technique of cognitive-behavioral therapy and counseling that Dr. Maultsby created is the "first comprehensive yet short-term, culture and drug-free technique of psychotherapy that produces long-term therapeutic results." In addition to authoring books for health professional therapists and counselors, Dr. Maultsby has written several books on emotional and behavioral self-management, elected Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists, Maxie Clarence Maultsby Jr., M.D., passed away on August 28, 2016, in Alexandria, Virginia.

“His main interest was teaching people how they can free themselves from emotional suffering. Maultsby believed that for people with chemically and structurally healthy brains, most suffering comes from the learned emotional habits and the cultivation of unhealthy attitudes, beliefs and thoughts.” - Author Unknown

MYTH 3: Bad parenting causes mental conditions in our children.

FACT: Many factors – including poverty, unemployment, exposure to violence, migration, and other adverse circumstances and events – may influence the well-being and mental health of our children, their caregivers, and the relationship between them. Children and adolescents from loving, supportive homes can experience mental health difficulties, as can ones from homes where there may be caregivers who need support to maintain an optimum environment for healthy adolescent development. With support, caregivers can play an essential role in helping their children to overcome any problems they experience.
