✨I had so much fun as a 1st time presenter at the Annual UNC Running Symposium last week!
It was an honor to present amongst many old friends & colleagues in the area - a special thank you to the event organizers for having me.
This was a multidisciplinary 2-day course with presentations from providers & collaborators that every runner needs- sport psychology, sports MD, running PTs, dietitians, footwear specialists, & pelvic floor PTs.
My goal was to help shift narrative about women’s health issues so that as a collective we can help support more women sooner and ultimately help women reach their running goals - whether that is confidence with chasing after their kids in the parking lot, running in pregnancy, or hitting big PRs at a race.
I believe it is important for sports & orthopedic providers to understand the breadth of the pelvic floor speciality to refer out.
It’s not enough to ask “do you have any bowel or bladder problems”?
Why- Because pelvic health is more than that & because our society has normalized living with pelvic floor issues, many people do not know what is normal nor are they aware that can get help.
I also shared with the group the PDF Sentinel- this is a screening tool that any provider can use with any level of athlete to increase early access to care.
The big takeaways from many of the attendees I talked with about my presentation were
1) intersectionality of pelvic floor health and running mechanics for performance
2) the role of early access to care for women in pregnancy to optimize their ability to better understand their bodies in pregnancy and minimize birth injury risk
3) the role of low energy availability in bladder leaks and the importance of making sure athletes are connected to vital members of their community - like sport RDs.
I learned a lot from the other presentations and I look forward to attending next year. It happens every spring, so if you missed out— mark your calendars! If you are not local— you can come too!
